Late tries hand NYC Titans win over Raiders
Two long range tries in the final five minutes have helped the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans NYC side to a 36-28 victory against Canberra at Skilled Park today.
Despite leading 24-12 at halftime, the Titans found themselves trailing 28-24 inside the final 10 minutes but came back to seal their fourth win of the season with long range tries to winger Japeth Vaoa (73rd minute) and centre Hymel Hunt (76th minute).
Fullback Shaun Carney and centre Jackson Springer were also heavily involved in both tries while left winger Lasi Taliauli scored a double in the opening 40 minutes.
The win elevates the NYC Titans off the bottom of the competition ladder on for and against after 14th placed Souths suffered a heavy defeat to North Queensland on Friday night.
The Titans shot out of the gates with two quick converted tries to winger Lasi Taliauli and halfback Matthew Beddow to lead 12-0 after eight minutes.
The Raiders got back in the contest with a converted try to forward Michael Chee Kam to reduce the margin to 12-6 before Taliauli bagged his second and Anderson again converted from the sideline to edge the Titans ahead 18-6 with 15 minutes remaining in the first half.
However, the Raiders wouldn’t go away with Chee Kam scoring his second try to again reduce the margin before fullback Shaun Carney regained the 12-point buffer with a try just before halftime.
The Raiders started strongly after the break, reducing the margin to 24-22 with tries to Adam Tangata and halfback Ben Picker before hitting the front for the first time through a try to centre Jack Wighton.
The visitors looked as though they may run away with the match before late tries to Vaoa and Hunt secured a much needed victory for the Titans. Source: titans.com.au
