Queanbeyan Kangaroos to make finals move

THE Queanbeyan Kangaroos will be looking to break back into the Canberra Raiders Cup top four for the first time since May when they take on the Gungahlin Bulls at Freebody Oval this Saturday.

With four rounds to play the reigning premiers are in fifth position on the ladder, equal on points with the fourth-placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers.

But while they may be within touching distance of a finals berth, the Kangaroos must overcome a poor for-and-against and a tough road home if they are to earn the opportunity to defend their title.

The Roos will be expected to account for a lacklustre Bulls side this weekend but from then on the Queanbeyan club's run to the play-offs becomes a tricker proposition.

In the concluding three weeks of the regular season the Kangaroos have been drawn to face Yass, Goulburn and Tuggeranong; sides ranked sixth, third and fourth respectively.

It's a run that leaves the Kangaroos' finals destiny squarely in their own hands according to captain Aaron Gorrell.

"The whole competition has been so inconsistent this year that you can't get in a position where you're relying on other results going your way,'' he said.

"We've probably been one of the main offenders when it comes to that inconsistency, I think the last couple of weeks have been a lot better but we still need to be improving each week.''

While the Roos have posted wins in their past two starts against the Woden Valley Rams and West Belconnen, neither of those sides will likely feature in September.

The Blues, meanwhile, will also be out to take down Woden when they clash at Phillip Oval. A win against the seventh-placed Rams could see the competition front-runners move five points clear at the top of the ladder. The Blues head into the contest on the back of a comfortable 44-14 win over the Bulls at the West Belconnen Leagues Club last weekend.

Dennis Gordon and Scott Rutland both scored doubles in the 30-point victory as Adam Doyle's men reaffirmed their premiership favouritism.
