The Yass Magpies took a big step towards a finals berth with a 16-14 victory against fellow finals rivals Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Walker Park on Saturday.

Goal kicking proved the difference in the three tries apiece contest with Yass’ Timothy Warden kicking two goals and Belconnen’s Jarrod Teka only one.

The Magpies now sit in equal 4th place having won five of their last seven matches. This follows a dismal start to their season which had them sitting last after six rounds.

Despite the loss, Tuggeranong’s Michael Brophy kept up his impressive try scoring feats with his 14th try of the year. Jeffrey Morgan and Brent Wallace scored the other Bushrangers tries.

Phillip Sparnon scored two tries for Yass with teammate Cody Timoti scoring the other Magpies try.

Only four rounds remain in the 2011 Canberra Raiders Cup first grade competition, and with seven teams still vying for a top four finish, every match is crucial.

In other round 14 matches, the Blues extended their lead with a 44-14 away victory to the Bulls. Goulburn snuck home 25-24 against second placed Scholars, and the Rams kept their slim finals hopes alive with a 56-20 demolition to bottom placed West Belconnen. Queanbeyan Kangaroos had the bye.

Tuggeranong play Goulburn at home next week while Yass will take on the Scholars.
