Canberra Raiders star John Bateman has been released from the final year of his contract, the English recruit quitting the club that brought him to the NRL. The Raiders announced Bateman had decided to leave early, but it is not known whether he will stay in Australia or return to English club Wigan to be closer to family. Bateman had a deal to be in Canberra from 2019-21, but was given permission to seek offers from elsewhere after less than a season in the capital. The 26-year-old has decided the 2020 season will be his last with the Raiders, vowing to do everything he can to finish in Canberra on a high when he recovers from a shoulder injury. The Canterbury Bulldogs were interested in securing the lock's services, but the lure of home may prove too strong in its next deal.
