CRRL: CRC Match Report: Warriors Win But Face Nervous Wait
« on: August 12, 2017, 05:40:28 PM »

The West Belconnen Warriors will be praying for a Goulburn win on Sunday afternoon as the defending premiers managed to defeat the Queanbeyan Kangaroos 30-10 at Seears Workwear Oval.

However, Tuggeranong’s 42-14 win over the Queanbeyan Blues means that anything other than a Goulburn win will see the Warriors' season finish in disappointment.

Despite having six players absent through various reasons, the Kangaroos started the brighter of the two sides as Josh Ayers crashed over the line off the back of a run from Tolokana Aroha-Tuinauvai.

From that moment, the Warriors slowly wrestled control from the Roos and shortly hit the lead when Chris Thorley gathered the ball and made a break downfield. With the Kangaroos defence closing in on him, the centre managed to get an offload away to his winger Ricky Fulivai who scored under the posts.

A successful Bobby Roberts conversion ensured that the Warriors entered the break with a 6-4 lead.

The Warriors furthered their lead early in the second half when Aidan Greenwood collected a short ball and muscled his way over the line.

Frustrated, the Kangaroos gave away repeated penalties and West Belconnen made them pay when Harry Brown set up Chris Thorley for his first try of the afternoon.

Tori Freeman-Quay scored a second half double with his first a spectacular Warriors try after Ryan McQueen started an attacking raid after he bounced out of a tackle. The captain passed the ball to Harry Brown who produced a spectacular offload to allow Freeman-Quay to score.

Good footwork from Joshua Essex gave the Kangaroos a late consolation try but it wasn’t enough to stop the Warriors from securing a 30-10 win.

West Belconnen Warriors 30 (Tries: R Fulivai, A Greenwood, C Thorley, T Freeman-Quay 2; R Roberts 5) d Queanbeyan Kangaroos 10 (Tries: J Ayers, J Essex; Goals: M Connolly)
