Latest News:

Brisbane's reinforcements have arrived with English international Jack Reed and Queensland forward Corey Parker cleared to return from injury in Canberra against the Raiders on Sunday.

With New Zealand international Josh Hoffman also back from suspension, Brisbane will only be missing strike centre Justin Hodges and winger Jharal Yow Yeh from their top line-up.

Reed returns from a broken leg to left centre allowing the in-form Alex Glenn to shift back into his preferred role in the second-row alongside skipper Sam Thaiday.

Parker (knee) resumes his duties at lock with Josh McGuire dropping to the bench at the expense of Dunamis Lui.

Utility Ben Hunt ran a bit at five-eighth at training on Saturday, suggesting Corey Norman's groin injury may not be 100 per cent.

Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin said while the late changes would bolster the side they would not guarantee them a win unless the players turned up with the right attitude.

After a week of post mortems, Griffin put his hand up and accepted his share of blame for Brisbane's last two losses to the Gold Coast and Parramatta, admitting he'd been guilty of losing focus.

"I probably haven't been at my best either the way we've been preparing," said Griffin.

"Something like that (42-22 loss to Parramatta) on Monday night smacks you in the face and gives you a reason to have a look in the mirror.

"Everyone one of us need to do better."

Griffin however rejected suggestions anyone one was "under examination" saying Brisbane had experienced a few bad weeks and needed to be better on Sunday.

He said he and the players accepted they had to be accountable for their performances.

"There's no issue there," he said.

"When you get a couple of poor losses, everyone is responsible not just three or four players or a few incidents in the game."

The players have spoken about attitude all week and what they need to do to get back on track but Griffin said the time for talking was over.

"They don't need to do any more talking. They're not different people to what they were a month ago when people were kissing them on the backside and telling them how good they were going," he said.

"We've all got to put our best performance on the field (on Sunday), and next week and the week after and that will get us to where we deserve to be."

Raiders representative forward Dave Shillington said with only five games left beating Brisbane was "a must" if Canberra wanted to contest the finals.

"Brisbane will be looking forward to having Parker and Reed back," he said.

Shillington will clash with his Origin teammate Petero Civoniceva, aware he is retiring at season's end.

"We looked at some video of Petro this morning and he's definitely still the sort of bloke you don't run straight on at," he said.

The race to the NRL finals has reached crisis point for up to nine teams with just five rounds to go.

Just three wins separates team five, North Queensland, and Canberra, running 13th, with 10 points still up for grabs for all teams hoping to qualify for September football.

While the Raiders' ambitions suffered a serious blow on Sunday in a 36-6 thrashing at the hands of resurgent Newcastle, they are still part of the hopeful logjam.

All they - or any of the chasing pack - need to do is get on a run, says St George Illawarra's Dean Young.

The Canberra Raiders' injury crisis has deepened with four players having scans yesterday following Sunday's torrid 36-6 loss to Newcastle at Canberra Stadium.

Star fullback Josh Dugan's rotten luck continued after he suffered possible rib cartilage damage, just two games into his return from an ankle injury.

Winger Sandor Earl was cleared of any break to his hand after it swelled up after the match, and should be available to take on the Broncos at Canberra Stadium this Sunday.

Centre Blake Ferguson and second-rower Josh Papalii also had scans on hand injuries, the results of which will be known this morning. Tom Learoyd-Lahrs also limped off with a torn hamstring in the second half, and his initial diagnosis was four weeks on the sidelines.

Sports psychologist Gaylene Clews has urged Canberra to rectify its insipid home performances by pinpointing the reasons behind the Raiders' outstanding recent form on the road.

Canberra has traditionally been near invincible at home and poor away, but statistics prove that perception has dramatically flipped on its head.

This year the Raiders have won five of 10 away matches and just three of nine at home, a trend which continues to perplex coach David Furner.

Canberra was outstanding in big road wins over title contenders Melbourne and Cronulla in the past month, but inexplicably poor home efforts against Gold Coast and Newcastle have followed.

CANBERRA skipper David Shillington has challenged his side to adopt their trench warfare road formula at home after the Raiders were embarrassed by Newcastle at Canberra Stadium.

Slippery customer … Knights halfback Tyrone Roberts does his best to prevent Raiders star Josh Dugan racing away at Canberra Stadium.

With both teams starting the match two points outside the top eight, it was the Knights who displayed the necessary desperation and execution to secure their third straight win.

In contrast, the Raiders enhanced their reputation as a psychologist's worst nightmare by backing up last week's huge win at Cronulla with another shocking home performance. After their points differential took another hit, Canberra most likely need to win all five of their remaining matches to make the finals. But their inexplicable habit of backing up a great away effort with an insipid home display means their season is realistically over.

Put simply, the desperation and intensity the Raiders displayed to shock the Sharks 36-4 in Sydney last week was non-existent in the second half. Once a fortress, Canberra Stadium must now feel like a trip to Disneyland for visiting teams. The Raiders have won just three of nine games there this year.

And Shillington declared they need to improve their mental approach to home games to avoid another humiliation against the Broncos at Canberra this week.

''When we go away I personally think people are preparing for a battle, that we need to dig in and work hard for each other,'' Shillington said. ''When we're away, we've got six or seven chasers trapping people in goal and getting repeat sets. The last couple of games at home, it just seems like we're not prepared to dig in for each other, there's no desperation.''

Newcastle wingers Kevin Naiqama (two tries) and Akuila Uate were superb, Canberra making one solitary line break to Newcastle's 11. With their potent back five running riot, only some scrambling defence prevented the Raiders trailing by more than 12-0 at half-time.

In the sixth minute, Newcastle back-rower Alex McKinnon found winger Naiqama with a fine cut-out pass, and he gave the visitors a 6-0 lead. Seven minutes later, Uate looked set to be trapped in goal by a Sam Williams short kick, which could have allowed the Raiders to wrest some momentum.

Instead, Uate broke through to run 90 metres downfield. The next play Raiders winger Sandor Earl was sin-binned for tackling a try-line bound Zeb Taia from an offside position.

Canberra's poor chase on Uate highlighted the Raiders' inability to take their chances to wrest back momentum in games, a problem which has plagued them all year. The Knights scored with Earl off the field either side of half-time, and any chance the Raiders had of launching a comeback was dashed.

''I don't want to say we're young, but experience helps you prepare right and know when you have to take your opportunities,'' Shillington said. ''When we get early tries on us we fail to find touch or we kick dead … it's a very frustrating habit we have.''

A clearly shattered Shillington was at a loss to pinpoint the reason behind the Raiders' yips at home.

''I just truly believed we had some momentum and we had put our up and down [form] behind us,'' he said. ''The only good thing to come out of today is we have another home game next week to turn it around.

''But before next week we really have to address those issues of when you get an opportunity to tackle someone in goal, for example, to show that desperation.''

The Raiders' forwards, so impressive against Cronulla, were manhandled by the Knights' pack, with Chris Houston, Willie Mason and Adam Cuthbertson outstanding. Newcastle halves Jarrod Mullen and Tyrone Roberts comprehensively outplayed Raiders playmakers Williams and Josh McCrone, especially in the kicking department.

Canberra's plight was compounded by a hamstring injury to prop Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, while Joe Picker was placed on report in the second half for a head-slam tackle on Mullen.

Canberra coach David Furner said the Knights handled the pressure of what was effectively a knockout game for both sides far better than the youthful Raiders.

''It's semi-final-type football and virtually sudden death,'' he said. ''That's the football we're in at the moment, we're in that semi-final-type football now and we didn't handle that well in the second half.

''It [our home form] is a tough one for everyone to swallow, players, coaches and fans.''

The Canberra Raiders have named Dane Tilse at starting prop for this Sunday’s clash against the Brisbane Broncos at Canberra Stadium, after Tom Learoyd-Lahrs was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Learoyd-Lahrs will miss a minimum of two weeks with a hamstring injury he sustained against the Knights on Sunday, with the prop expected to be fit for the round 24 clash against the Roosters.

Sam Mataora returns to the Raiders bench for the match, after making way for Tilse last weekend.

Fullback Josh Dugan has been named for the Raiders but is battling a rib injury and he will be given until later in the week to prove his fitness.

In some good news for the Raiders three players were cleared of broken hands yesterday following scans, with Blake Ferguson, Sandor Earl and Josh Papalii all fit to take their place this weekend.

Reece Robinson will play his 50th NRL match on Sunday.

THE NRMA Insurance Broncos receive a boost this week with the welcome return of their number-one player.

Fullback Josh Hoffman will assume his fullback position and take back the no.1 jersey from Luke Capewell.

Neither Hodges (hamstring, ankle), Parker (knee ligament strain) nor Reed (fractured leg) were named to take on the Raiders in Canberra this Sunday.

Dale Copley is also still out with a fractured leg.

Youngsters Aaron Whitchurch and Dunamis Lui have kept their spots on the bench.

The Canberra Raiders are proud to announce that they will be supporting the Close the Gap campaign this Sunday against the Brisbane Broncos.

Close the Gap is Australia’s largest ever campaign to improve the life expectancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The life expectancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait people is more than a decade less than for other Australians and the Raiders will be asking all our supporters to pledge their support on Sunday to Close the Gap.

Even though Indigenous people make up just 3% of the total population, 12% of all current NRL players are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

They include Canberra Raiders stars such as Joel Thompson, Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, Blake Ferguson, Travis Waddell, Reece Robinson, Edrick Lee and Jack Wighton, which makes rugby league the perfect vehicle to promote the cause.

A proud Indigenous All Stars representative, Thompson has described the opportunity to assist in closing the gap as an honour.

“Ever since I started playing in the NRL it’s always been a privilege to have young kids looking up to me. Sport is a big thing in Aboriginal communities so to be seen as a role model by them makes me want to be able to provide a good example to them all.”

“With the NRL dedicating this round to Closing the Gap it’s a great way to close that gap between Aboriginal people’s health and life expectancy and that of non-indigenous Australians. Eating healthily and playing sports such as rugby league is a great way to close the gap in health inequality.”

Rugby league teaches us the value of teamwork and supporting your mates. Terry Campese believes closing the life expectancy gap requires a team effort by all Australians.

“It’s a great initiative that the NRL has got going on and all of us here at the Raiders are proud to be able to support the cause,” Campese enthused.

“There’s unfortunately a lot of a difference in the life expectancy between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians and hopefully we are able to raise more awareness of this issue.”

Campese is able to witness firsthand the positive effect Aboriginal and Torres Strait NRL stars can have on the wider community.

“The actions of guys like Joel and Tommy (Learoyd-Lahrs) have a massive impact on kids and Aboriginal kids in particular. When we go to schools and out to community carnivals and things like that all of the young indigenous kids look up to those boys that played for the Indigenous All Stars.”

“They’re their idols so any positive messages that they have the kids are willing to take on board. Rugby league has a lot of indigenous representatives so the more that they get out there and speak more about the certain problems the better.”

“It’s definitely important to eat healthy to get the energy throughout the day to be able to concentrate. It’s important in rugby league and important as a young kid going to school. It’s a long day at school and you want to get the most out of your learning so you want to eat the right food to get the best energy from it.”

With over 178 000 Australians signed up to the Close the Gap pledge, the Raiders are calling on all attendees on Sunday’s match against the Brisbane Broncos pledge their support to further aid in Closing the Gap.

Take a look back at the last time these two sides met ending with a 30 - 6 Broncos win.

It was a Broncos home game back in round 7 with Ben Hunt wearing the number 7 jersey and Corey Norman grabbed a double.

NRMA Insurance Broncos' teammates have backed a turnaround to come if the team can make the job of the halves easier.

Teammates have rallied around Peter Wallace and Corey Norman, saying Brisbane's inability to reach the advantage line was putting pressure on their playmakers.

"It's hard for Corey and Pete to create things if we aren't giving them something to play off," Broncos utility Ben Hunt said.

"I don't think you can blame the halves. We need to get some go-forward first.

"As a playmaker, if you're getting slow play-the-balls you can't create too much. If we get our go-forward right it will help them."

Kiwi Test star Alex Glenn backed Wallace to bounce back, starting against the Raiders.

"Pete has been copping a hard time, with everyone saying he's down on form, but I still rate him one of the best and toughest halfbacks in the competition," Glenn said.

"He's a strong man to go out on the field in the face of all this criticism he's copping.

"It's definitely something Hook (Griffin) has been pushing with the halves, to run the ball more often instead of (passing) out the back."

ON a beautiful Sunday afternoon, a Broncos side missing Origin players led out hard against the Raiders before withstanding a Green Machine comeback with a golden-point victory.

leading 24-0 and seemingly in control, the Broncos were shocked by four Raidres tries that sent the game into extra time.

It was left to Peter Wallace to provide the win.

ALEX Glenn says the NRMA Insurance Broncos have plenty to play for this week and a spot in the finals is not at the top of the list.

After the Broncos' losses to the Titans and Eels the club sits equal fourth on the ladder.

The team needs rapid improvement to keep their top-four dream alive.

And personal pride is one area Glenn pinpointed that the Broncos need to focus on.

"It was a tough session today but we need it," he said after training this morning.

"We need to build that hunger and aggressiveness back in our game.

"We haven't been too proud of our performances the last two games.

"We are not playing to our abilities.

"We have got something to play for and to earn a bit of pride back."

ATTITUDE is the buzz word for the NRMA Insurance Broncos as they try to dig themselves out of as late-season hole.

Successive losses to the Titans and Eels have the Broncos on the precipice of losing a top four spot.

There was some serious talking being done at Red Hill this week ahead of Saturday's game against Canberra.

"There is a bit of pressure now," said Ben Te'o.

"We really have to improve our attitude and defence, and defence has a lot to do with attitude

"That's the main thing we have been working on.

"'Hook' (coach Anthony Griffin) has been very honest with us. We have all had our individual reviews and they have told us where we need to improve.

"We need to go out there and get results."

The big loss to the Eels last Monday shocked the team, said Te'o.

"If that's not a wake up call, I don't know what it is," he said.
