DAVID Furner knew what was coming when his mobile phone rang at 4am yesterday. On the other end of the line was Canberra prop Dane Tilse. He had some good news for himself but some bad news for the Raiders coach.

Tilse's wife, Katie, had gone into labour for the birth of their first child. He was going to have to make a mercy dash back from the team's Sydney base at Crowne Plaza, Baulkham Hills, to the nation's capital. He would be a late withdrawal from the game against Penrith at Centrebet Stadium.

Furner already had enough props out of action, with Tom Learoyd-Lahrs (hamstring) and Brett White (knee) on the sidelines. He could ill afford to lose another with the Raiders fighting to remain in the hunt for the finals.

But he need not have worried. The Raiders still had Queensland prop and captain David Shillington in the front row. They also had plenty of unsung heroes such as Sam Mataora, Mark Nicholls and Jarrad Kennedy who were happy to step up in Tilse's absence.

Kennedy's effort was particularly impressive, having played for Mounties the previous night in the NSW Cup.

"Tilsey (rang) about 4 o'clock this morning so if my eyes look a bit bloodshot . . . " Furner said.

"When my phone rang and I saw it was Tilsey I thought, 'I know what this is about'. Look, the young players there with Marky Nicholls and Sammy Mataora and 'JK' -- he played a half of Premier League yesterday -- so I made sure just in case he ended up playing some game time in first grade.

"We did plan for it, but certainly the players you have mentioned there are pretty experienced. I thought 'Shillo' was really good today. He got plenty of game time and he led from the front."

Admittedly the Raiders still made hard work of it. Penrith looked by far the better team in the opening 40 minutes, but walked into the sheds at halftime with only one try though winger Josh Mansour to show for its efforts.

Shillington admitted Furner was far from happy with the team's first-half performance and gave them a much-needed pep talk.

"We just needed to pick it up all around the park," Shillington said.

"You run a bit harder, have a bit more support, get better contact and lock it up.

"Heaps of things like that. Just improve our attitude and get back in the grind with them."

The Raiders did more than just get into the grind in the second half. They put their foot on the accelerator and ran away with the match. They levelled the scores after Jarrod Croker was awarded a benefit-of-the-doubt try by video referee Paul Mellor.

They went to the lead after Josh McCrone fielded a Penrith kick and raced 65 metres to score. They finished things off after Joe Picker grabbed a lucky try from a McCrone kick that had bounced off the boot of Penrith five-eighth Lachlan Coote.

The win leaves the Raiders just outside the top eight and only one win away from joining Wests Tigers on 26 competition points. They face the Sydney Roosters (h), Canterbury (h) and the Warriors (a) in their final three games.

"It's nice to still be in the race to make the finals," Shillington said. "It's where we want to be and the belief is still there. If we keep winning week to week it would be great to be in there in September."

While Learoyd-Lahrs and Tilse could both return for Saturday's game against the Sydney Roosters at Canberra Stadium, the Raiders could be without backrower Josh Papalii after he was placed on report for a high tackle on Panthers five-eighth Lachlan Coote.

Furner downplayed the incident which saw Papalii run a decoy and raise his arm into the head of Coote, who was rushing in to make a tackle.

We were way off the pace - Cleary

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary believes Penrith were simply too far off the pace following their 46-6 loss to the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park.

The Panthers trailed 34-0 at the break, and Cleary said it was a case of a good Storm side putting his team to the sword.

“We were pretty bad today,” Cleary admitted after the game.

“Defensively particularly in the first half I thought we were just way off the pace. And against the Storm obviously with their key players all playing well they’re going to punish you and that’s what happened.

“We didn’t get any defensive rhythm at all. I guess when you concede a try in the first set that doesn’t help, but we just failed to get that rhythm where we could consistently control their attack and we couldn’t do that in the first half.”

The Panthers did show plenty of fight in the second half, but Cleary said it was a case of too little, too late.

“I actually thought we created a lot of chances; it was just poor finishing on a few times,” he said.

“But for that we would have scored a few more points, so that was definitely a positive to take out of the game, but I thought the last try summed up the day really, one we’d rather forget.

“It was certainly disappointing early, I mean they scored on the fourth tackle. Then we lost Lachlan Coote for a time there and our attack really struggled at that point which didn’t help at the start of the game. But every time they put on a big play they seemed to score early, so all that does is help their confidence and drain ours.

“We were just well beaten by a good team today. They obviously had a lot to prove, and were very keyed up for a big performance. We’ve just got to put that one behind us, and I’m confident we’ll be able to do that.”

Next Up:
In Round 23, the Penrith Panthers welcome the Raiders to Centrebet Stadium on Sunday August 12, with kick-off at 2pm.

Canberra Raiders winger Sandor Earl has primed himself to ''prove a point'' when he returns to Penrith this weekend for the first time since quitting the club.

Frustrated with a lack of opportunities at the Panthers, Earl requested a mid-season release in late June.

It's a punt that has paid off, with the 22-year-old set to announce a two-year deal with Canberra as soon as this week.

Having languished in NSW Cup for most of the year with Windsor, Earl has proven he belongs in the NRL over the past six weeks at the Raiders.

Canberra centre Jarrod Croker believes Josh Dugan can provide the game-breaking attacking spark the Raiders need to make the NRL top eight.

Canberra centre Jarrod Croker believes the return to form of hot-stepping fullback Josh Dugan is more important to the Raiders' NRL finals hopes than the mental trickery used to beat Brisbane.

The Raiders overcame their horror recent home record on Sunday with an emphatic 28-12 win over the Broncos after coach David Furner booked the team into a hotel in NSW the previous night to simulate an away match.

Boasting just three wins from their nine previous games at Canberra Stadium and with their top-eight hopes looking wobbly, the ploy worked as the Raiders scored four tries in a slick second-half display.

Croker said on Monday that Dugan's two late tries were a timely boost for the Raiders, who are 11th on the ladder but one of five teams on 22 points heading into the final month of the season.

"That's the type of player that Duges is - we know he's a big-game player," said Croker, the NRL's leading point-scorer with 176 including 15 tries.

"He can pop up and win those games for you. He just showed he's all class yesterday with two tries in the last five or so minutes to put the game out of reach for the Broncos."

Dugan's typically enthusiastic effort was a big confidence boost for the No.1, who was struggling to make an impact after returning from an ankle injury.

But Croker also pointed to his side's reduced error rate against the Broncos, which meant they weren't forced to defend for long energy-sapping periods that had led to them conceding some big scores in recent rounds.

"It's a simple game when you hold the ball," said Croker.

"When we complete (our sets) up at that high 80 per cents we knock off teams like Melbourne and St George (Illawarra).

"If we're leaking points, it's because we are not holding the ball and we're just defending all day."

And while Croker was happy to defend his coach's "home away from home" hotel tactic, he wasn't convinced they needed to replicate it for Canberra clashes with the Sydney Roosters and Canterbury in coming weeks.

"Everyone has got their own preparation," he said.

"Whether the boys like to stay in their own bed or sleep at a motel I'm not really sure ... it didn't bother me one bit.

"It obviously worked ... if the coaches want to do it and that's what's going to keep us winning games then we'll do it I suppose."

A fitter Josh Dugan leads Canberra's finals charge

RAIDERS superstar Josh Dugan says his horror run with injuries had proven a "wake-up call" - and he quickly overhauled his training regime to ensure he remained on the paddock.

If Canberra are any hope of making the finals, they will need Dugan fighting fit.

The gun No.1 has made a real difference in his three games back from an ankle injury, including three tries and 22 tackle busts. Dugan will only strip fitter for Sunday's must-win trip to Penrith.

It was only after his latest ankle injury, which came after a six-week shoulder injury - not to mention calf and ankle injuries at different stages last year - that Dugan realised he needed a more professional approach to his preparation.

"I've had a run of bad luck the past two years with injuries I couldn't really have helped," Dugan said.

"Simple things like getting caught in a tackle, landing on my elbow and then my shoulder popping out. It was things like that. It takes a run of injuries to wake you up.

"Since I've had injuries, I'm always in the gym doing extras and trying to stay on the park. It's made me more professional in a way. I want to play the next four games and then maybe play September footy.

"That's the goal. I don't think any team looks at not playing in September.

"If we get another win (on Sunday), there's no saying what we can do. We've got the side to definitely make the eight, it's just a matter of putting it together and having that consistency.

"That's what we have lacked this year. We'll win by 30, then we'll switch off (the following week) and get beat by 30. I think we get ahead of ourselves. We need to stay focused and take that same mentality into next week like we had on the weekend (against Brisbane)."

Dugan failed to find touch with a penalty kick, which led to a Broncos try during Canberra's 28-12 triumph. He immediately made up for it, scoring an individual try, then grubbering for himself to bag a double in the final seconds.

At 22, Dugan is seen as one of the senior players at Canberra, a role he's happy with.

While injuries cost him a Blues jumper this season, he said he had given little thought to a Kangaroo tour at season's end, preferring to focus on the final months for the Raiders. Possible wins against Penrith and the Roosters will have them in the mix.

CANBERRA yesterday confirmed the signing of hard-hitting Newcastle forward Joel Edwards to a three-year deal.

The Canberra Raiders have named the same staring 17 for their clash with the Penrith Panthers on Sunday afternoon, with an extended bench the only change to the side who defeated the Broncos last weekend.

Bronson Harrison made a successful return for Mounties last weekend after a long layoff with a back injury and has been named in jersey 19, while Jarrad Kennedy has also been included on the bench.

The addition of Harrison and Kennedy is to cover Joe Picker who will be monitored this week after sustaining a concussion against the Broncos, with one of the two dropping off the bench later in the week if Picker is cleared by medical staff.

Dane Tilse is also a possibility of missing out this weekend with his wife Katie expecting their first child. Tilse will travel with the team but may have to leave the side if their first born is on the way.

Trevor Thurling is back on the injury list after his knee injury flared up before he was scheduled to play for Mounties last weekend.

Glenn Lazarus believes Canberra Raiders lock Shaun Fensom can emulate Bradley Clyde by lifting the players around him with his relentless thirst for work.

Fensom etched his name into club folklore when he became the first Raider in recorded history to make more than 50 tackles (52) and more than 20 runs (22) in a game against Brisbane on Sunday.

Front-row legend Lazarus said the star-studded Raiders sides he played in often used Clyde's herculean feats as a spur to find something extra under fatigue.

And he is adamant Fensom can fill a similar role as Canberra looks to keep its finals hopes alive at Penrith on Sunday.

He's excitedly awaiting the biggest moment of his life, but Dane Tilse is willing to risk not being there for his firstborn child's arrival so he can help the Raiders keep their season alive at Penrith on Sunday.

Tilse's wife Katie is due to give birth next Tuesday, and the Raiders prop is prepared to dash back down the Hume Highway should the baby arrive early.

The odds of him withdrawing are slim but the loss of Tilse would be a huge blow to the Raiders, who likely need to win their remaining four games to make the finals.

His absence would also leave David Shillington as the last man standing in Canberra's vaunted prop quartet, with Brett White and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs sidelined by injury.

Who will make the top eight?

The Wests Tigers and Canberra Raiders have capitalised on losses by the Dragons, Titans and Knights last weekend to re-enter the logjam for the final positions in the top eight.

Round 22 saw Wests defeat cellar dwellers Parramatta to move up the ladder at the expense of the Titans and Knights, who lost to the top two sides.

The Dragons missed the opportunity to grab eighth spot after they were upset by the underachieving Roosters.

Canberra jumped back into contention after a shock victory over the hapless Broncos, who have lost their last three matches and are in danger of slipping out of the eight.

Round 22 created more confusion than clarity in the semi-final picture.

These results have puzzled rugby league fans, leaving them to ask themselves the question: Is my team going to make the top eight?

The State of Play after round 22:
6th Cowboys 26 80
7th Broncos 26 46
8th Tigers 24 -10
9th Titans 22 -6
10th Knights 22 -20
11th Raiders 22 -53
12th Dragons 22 -66

Currently, four points separate the teams from sixth to 12th position.

The Tigers currently hold eighth spot on 24 points, with four teams chasing on 22 points.

As a rule of thumb, 30 points will guarantee a side entry into the top eight.

28 points may be enough to get a team the final spot in the eight, depending on their points differential.

But finals football is not played in August.

Teams still have one more month to mould the fortunes and qualify for the top eight, even if it means winning every game.

A team’s draw, injuries and points differential will be crucial factors in determining whether they qualify for the NRL finals series.

The Knights and Broncos have the hardest draws of any of the teams remaining.

Newcastle will play their last four games against sides currently in the top eight: Sharks, Manly, Cowboys and Rabbitohs.

The Broncos on the other hand, who are trying to halt their nose-dive out of the finals contention, will face the Bulldogs, Storm and Sea Eagles in the next three weeks.

Brisbane is also depleted with injuries to key players like Corey Parker and Alex Glenn.

The Tigers have also had their depth severely tested.

Injuries to players in crucial positions have seen the Tigers’ game lack cohesion and continuity.

The loss of Tigers’ five-eighth Curtis Sironen has seen Robbie Farah shift into the halves, which changes the Tigers’ game plan and structure.

The Gold Coast is reaping the benefits of players returning from injury for the last month of football.

Ashley Harrison, who returned for the Titans last week, was one of their best against the second placed Rabbitohs.

Greg Bird will be a major addition to the Gold Coast line-up as the Titans push for their first finals birth since 2010.

But injuries and the draw are out of the players’ hands.

The only way the players can control their own destiny other than winning, is through their points differential.

The Canberra Raiders (-72) and St. George Illawarra Dragons (-66) will suffer the most in this department.

There is a high possibility if the Raiders or the Dragons finish on 28 points, they will miss out on the finals due to an inferior points differential.

Canberra’s inconsistency is the reason for their ladder position.

The Raiders’ best performance can beat any side in the NRL, but it is their worst performance that would worry coach Furner.

The road to the finals series will encounter speed humps for the clubs vying for the final spots in the top eight.

Just like round 22, fans are left to ponder whether their side has done enough to qualify for the finals.

The final eight is a mystery and only time will be able to answer our questions. It is more than likely that we won’t know who makes up the eight until the end of round 26.

Will your team be playing finals footy?

They’ve fessed up, taken ownership and acknowledged the lesson learned.

Now, the Panthers are primed and ready to redeem their pride with a scintillating performance against the Canberra Raiders at Centrebet Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Lock Cameron Ciraldo said the team hadn’t let their disastrous loss to the Melbourne Storm last weekend, in which the side trailed 34-0 at half-time, rattle the confidence they’d built during their back-to-back wins in the preceding fortnight.

‘‘As soon as we got through our video of the Melbourne trip, we focused our attention to this week’s game and being positive leading into that,’’ Ciraldo said.

‘‘Obviously being down in Melbourne was a big lesson and the only way to move forward is to learn from that but put it in the back of our minds and remember we won two before that.’’

Ciraldo said dominating the Raiders’ hard-hitters would be crucial to shutting Canberra down and clawing a win.

‘‘They’re obviously a very big and physical side so the way we match them physically in the forward pack will go a long way to determining the result,’’ he said.

‘‘We can’t dish up what we did last week, we really need to come with a good attitude and be prepared to rip in.’’

The Panthers have won 30 of their 60 matches against the Raiders but their success rate at Centrebet Stadium is more favourable, with 16 wins from 26 home clashes.

‘‘I’m confident about the team we’ve got going into every game,’’ Ciraldo said.

‘‘For us, it’s just worrying about our game and preparing the best we can to put on the best performance we can.’’

Reflecting on last weekend’s first half massacre, Ciraldo said the side was simply bowled over after the Storm’s try in the 34th second and were never able to regain their composure.

‘‘It all happened so fast,’’ he said.

‘‘We were just off our game and ran into a side that was running hot.

‘‘We really went down there with high hopes and just that first couple of tries really rattled us and I don’t think we really recovered.''

Canberra skipper David Shillington believes the Raiders can still make the NRL finals, but it will take a big effort to get there.

The Raiders lie just two points outside the top eight following last weekend's home win against Brisbane, one of four teams on 22 points with four matches left in the campaign.

Shillington says the Raiders' run home gives them hope despite one of their final matches being a clash against ladder-leading Canterbury.

"Other than that, we're playing teams that are below us or around us on the table," Shillington said.

"We've probably got one of the best runs out of all the teams charging for the finals."

Shillington believes the Raiders will need at least three wins to book a finals spot, though he's aiming higher than that starting with this weekend's clash with Penrith.

"If we won all four, that means we are in," he said.

"If we won three, there's a possibility we could be in.

"I'd like to play it safe and win all four."

Shillington believes Josh Dugan's return from injury in time for the team's run home is a big plus.

He feels the star fullback brings a spark to the team's attack which could prove the difference in their finals hunt.

"He's a bit of an x-factor for us," Shillington said.

"You can't underestimate how much you miss people like him."

Penrith Panthers v Canberra Raiders
Centrebet Stadium
Sunday 2pm

It’s do-or-die for the enigmatic, tipster-unfriendly Raiders who must take down Penrith at the foot of the Blue Mountains if they are to keep their 2012 premiership dream alive.

Meanwhile the 15th-placed Panthers need a late surge to guarantee they avoid the wooden spoon, with plenty of players on notice and needing to impress Ivan Cleary if they are to hang onto their jerseys for 2013.

The form of these two sides could not be more contrasting: Canberra delivered top-four aspirants Brisbane a huge blow winning 28-12 in the nation’s capital last week, while Penrith   succumbed to Melbourne – their sixth loss from their past eight games – in a 40-point hammering that revived the Storm’s campaign after five previous defeats.

However, it’s tough to predict which Raiders unit will turn up: remarkably since Round 14 the Green Machine have run hot and cold week to week, leaving their fans and coach David Furner truly perplexed. In that time they have defeated the Knights, lost to the Cowboys, turned that around with victory over the Dragons, smashed the Storm, succumbed to the Titans, savaged the Sharks, were blitzed by the Knights (in a return meeting) before blindsiding the Broncos. Exciting yes… but not the sort of stability required to travel deep into the semi-finals should they progress.

Clearly they need to win to stay relevant – given the logjam of wannabe semi-finalists jostling for the last available place in the top eight a defeat would almost certainly bring down the curtain on their season.

In roster news Ivan Cleary has made a couple of changes to the Panthers’ line-up, with David Simmons rejoining the squad on the wing at the expense of Travis Robinson and Matt Robinson elevated to the starting line-up in the second row, with Cameron Ciraldo shifting to lock and Nigel Plum benched. Danny Galea and Dayne Weston are new faces on the interchange.

Meanwhile David Furner has named an unchanged 17, adding Jarrad Kennedy and Bronson Harrison to form an extended interchange.

Watch Out Panthers: Raiders five-eighth Josh McCrone is among illustrious company when it comes to helping team-mates steam through gaps – he has 17 line-break assists to his name, the fourth-most in the comp behind superstars Thurston, Cronk and Marshall. In particular he’s forged great partnerships with Jarrod Croker and Reece Robinson who have tallied 14 and 10 line busts respectively. If the Panthers allow McCrone time to plot the punch line could be a killer.

Raiders props Dave Shillington and Dane Tilse built a huge platform for their side in the win over the Broncos last week, ploughing out a combined 35 hit-ups for 297 metres of territory. Throw in the 22 runs and 172 metres from lock Shaun Fensom and it’s clear the Raiders have the potential to steamroll the Panthers who concede the sixth-most metres each game (1364).

Penrith’s kickers often get flustered into making errors when pressured. They’ve booted the ball out on the full on an NRL-high eight occasions to date. If the Raiders defenders get up into the face of Luke Walsh in the opening exchanges they can dominate field position.

Danger Sign: If the Panthers are trailing at halftime the home fans are bound to feel more than a little nervous – that’s because they have lost 10 of 11 games when behind on the scoreboard at the break this season.

Watch Out Raiders: Brisbane were unable to exploit this weakness last week but expect the Panthers to target the Raiders’ right edge. Canberra have leaked 45 tries through their left-edge defence, easily the most in the league.

Penrith have thrown caution to the wind in regards to offloads in the past three weeks. They average the fourth-fewest offloads in the comp (nine) but threw the ball around like a hot potato in their wins against the Roosters and Sharks, as well as their loss to the Storm. In those three matches they averaged 15 offloads per game – expect that trend to continue given the Raiders concede the fourth-most offloads (almost 12 per game). Clint Newton (24 offloads) will be the promoter in the forwards, while new five-eighth Lachlan Coote is capable of creating problems in the backs.

Coote has been a success in the No.6 since shifting there after Travis Burns’ suspension three weeks ago. He’s made a try assist in each of his two games and shown an ability to run and pass at the line.

The Raiders should make a special effort to prevent the ball from getting to Panthers interchange Matt Robinson – that’s because he leads the league in least touches required for every try scored (14.3).

Danger Sign: If the Raiders are forced to defend for long periods close to their try line. Canberra’s goal-line defence has been abysmal in 2012 – they’ve conceded 57 tries from within 10 metres of their line, 12 more than the next most vulnerable side Parramatta.

Michael Gordon v Josh Dugan: Playing just his fourth game in 2012 – and his fourth last in Panthers colours – Gordon is capable of ripping the Raiders to shreds with his devastating running game which yielded the second best average metre mark in the comp last season (179 metres). Meanwhile Dugan destroyed the Broncos with two tries last week in a determined display that included 12 tackle busts and 171 metres. Dugan is one of the most punishing running fullbacks in the comp, averaging around six tackle-breaks every 80 minutes.

Where It Will Be Won: Through the speedy outside backs. Canberra will utilise Jarrod Croker, Reece Robinson, Blake Ferguson and Josh Dugan at every opportunity. Croker and Robinson have combined for 26 tries down the left edge, while Ferguson has nine line-breaks and seven tries on the right side of the field. Meanwhile expect winger Sandor Earl to ramp up a notch after being cut loose by the Panthers mid-season. Penrith’s attack will be mounted via fullback Gordon, left centre Michael Jennings (eight tries and 11 line-breaks) and winger Josh Mansour who ranks third in the comp for average running metres (164) and busts through more than six tackles per game.

The History: Played 30; Panthers 30, Raiders 29, drawn 1. Penrith have won five of the past eight clashes between the sides including the past two. Penrith enjoy a 16-10 record at Centrebet Stadium, with one match drawn.

The Last Time They Met: Penrith defeated Canberra 19-18 at Canberra Stadium in Round 25 last year.

The Panthers drew first blood when halfback Luke Walsh finished off a long-range raid for a 6-nil lead after four minutes. However Canberra levelled proceedings when Josh McCrone charged over on the right edge with 20 minutes gone, before skipper Alan Tongue increased their lead to six points three minutes from halftime – Tongue’s try off a spilled bomb came in his final career game at his Canberra base.

It took the Panthers just two minutes to get back into the game after halftime, with Brad Tighe outleaping Reece Robinson to snare Luke Walsh’s pinpoint cross-field bomb for a 12-all scoreline.

David Simmons added to the Panthers’ tally eight minutes later when he crossed in the left corner and Luke Walsh gave the visitors a seven point buffer when he potted a field goal with 11 minutes left on the clock.

Raiders interchange Mick Picker gave home fans a glimmer of hope when he pounced on a deflected grubber kick to score 90 seconds from fulltime… but that was the end of the road for the Raiders.

Halfback Walsh was Penrith’s MVP with two try assists, while winger Simmons carved out 172 metres on the night.

Josh Dugan delivered a customary penetrative contribution, running 20 times for 168 metres, while halfback Sam Williams added two try assists.

Canberra were unlucky not to get the result: they completed six full sets more than Penrith, missed fewer tackles and made fewer errors. However, Penrith’s attack conjured more with the possession they had, making three line-breaks to the home side’s one.

Match Officials: Referees – Jason Robinson & Brett Suttor; Sideline Officials – Dan Eastwood & Luke Phillips; Video Referee – Paul Mellor.

The Way We See It: The venue could hold the key here: five of the Raiders’ nine wins this year have come away from home, while the Panthers have banked just three home victories from 10 attempts. That statistic and the burning motivation of a semi-finals berth should be enough to secure the Raiders the win. Canberra by six points.

Televised: Fox Sports 2 – Live 2pm.

The Panthers are ours for the taking, only the Eels have been worse this year. Raiders need to treat them like a top 4 side though and if we do we shouldnt have a problem beating them. Looking forward to this one too the Panthers are one of those teams (along with the Tigers, Storm and Dragons) that we really fire up to play so I'm expecting another good effort like we gave the Broncos last week.
