Top News:

The inclusion of new father Dane Tilse is the only change for the Raiders Saturday night match against the Roosters, after his wife Katie gave birth to their first child Ila Rose Tilse on Monday evening.

After having to leave the morning before last weekend’s match Tilse returns this weekend and moves back into the starting front row for the Green Machine, with Sam Mataora moving to the interchange bench and Jarrad Kennedy dropping out of the 17 to become 18th man.

Tom Learoyd-Lahrs has resumed rehab running but won’t be available this weekend, with the prop looking to resume squad training next week ahead of the Friday night match against the Bulldogs.

Bronson Harrison ‘s return from injury has been short lived, with the back rower sustaining a facial injury against Newcastle playing for Mounties last weekend. Scans later today will confirm how long he’ll be out of action for.

The Raiders are considering heading into camp again before Saturday's home clash against the Roosters after the left-field move worked wonders against Brisbane two weeks ago.

Having performed well on the road and poorly at home in preceding weeks, Canberra bunkered down at Eagle Hawk Rydges before its 28-12 victory over the Broncos at Canberra Stadium on August 5.

Needing to beat the struggling Roosters to keep their finals hopes alive, the Raiders are considering the same tactic this week.

''It's not out of the question, I'll talk to the playing group,'' Raiders coach David Furner said yesterday.

IT SHAPES as the Canberra Raiders' biggest home match in two years, with the potential to make or break their season.

But Raiders skipper David Shillington has urged his side to forget about next week's blockbuster against Canterbury and focus all its energies toward Saturday's do-or-die clash with the Sydney Roosters.

Should they win this week, their meeting with the Bulldogs, who have won their past 11 games, could be their most important game at Canberra Stadium since the 2010 semi-final against Wests Tigers.

A win over the Roosters would allow Canberra to square its season ledger at 11-11, and remain well and truly in the finals hunt, with two rounds remaining.

''We've just got to keep focused when the time is right this weekend,'' Shillington said.

''I think the coaching staff will freshen us up and we'll have a pretty light week, but come Friday's captain's run we have to make sure we're primed and ready to go.''

Raiders officials are confident of drawing the biggest home crowd of the season for the round 25 clash with the Bulldogs.

However, the Raiders' only home match on a Friday night this year would lose much of its lustre should the Roosters crush their finals hopes.

Upsets have been a commonplace recently as teams that are out of the finals adopt an all-or-nothing approach.

Penrith's carefree ''razzle dazzle'' style caused the Raiders early headaches on Sunday's 20-10 win at Centrebet Stadium.

With the pressure valve released, the Panthers played expansive football and Shillington expects the Roosters to adopt a similar style.

''They've got nothing to lose, which is dangerous - look at the Eels recently,'' Shillington said.

''I've been in teams … where if you've got nothing to lose, you have a bit of fun. Sometimes when you're having fun you play better footy, when you take things too seriously things can go wrong.

''I can imagine them throwing Martin Kennedy and [Jared] Waerea-Hargreaves into us one after the other and shifting it through [Mitchell] Pearce and [Braith] Anasta; pretty similar to Penrith.''

Penrith executed 24 offloads to Canberra's 10, an issue the Raiders plan to address, having conceded the fourth-most offloads this year.

''To Penrith's credit they threw everything at us at the start; their forwards were running with real intent, hitting and spinning and throwing offloads everywhere,'' Shillington said.

''We scrambled well, but we could have saved a lot of that energy for the back end if we had better first-up contact and wrestle.''

Canberra coach David Furner admitted it is crucial they shut down the Roosters' second phase play to quell their ad lib style.

''We've got to address that first half; we weren't as clinical as we should have been with the ball [against Penrith],'' Furner said.

''Obviously they troubled our defensive line with their offloads … it's something we have to address.''

The Canberra Raiders are proud to announce that Ronald McDonald House Canberra will be the game day charity at the upcoming home match against the Sydney Roosters this Saturday.

To make the day more enjoyable, both organizations have decided to hold a fancy dress competition at the game. Prizes will be awarded for the best male, best female and best group outfits.

“We’re encouraging everyone to get creative with their outfits,” said Raiders Game Day Coordinator Jake Roarty. “There will be a heap of Raiders giveaways including merchandise, tickets and other special prizes for the particularly best dressed people at the game.

“Ronald McDonald is a tremendous charity organisation and we as a club are extremely proud to be able to assist in raising funds for their positive endeavours within the ACT community.”

The Raiders will be encouraging all attendees of the game to donate generously at the outlets provided to a very worthwhile cause.

Ronald McDonald House Canberra will be opening its doors to their first families in September this year. The Canberra house will provide a home away from home for the families of seriously ill children who are receiving treatment at The Canberra Hospital.

Childhood illness can have a devastating effect on families. As well as all the fear and uncertainty, there are the practicalities of managing the family when a child is away in hospital, often for extended periods of time.

Ronald McDonald House Canberra is similarly pleased to be joining forces with a leader in the Canberra community.

“We’re very excited to be involved with the Canberra Raiders as the game day charity for the Sydney Roosters game,” said Narelle Casey, the Ronald McDonald House Relationships Development Manager.

“I’d like to encourage everyone to dress up in their fancy dress outfits and give generously for the Canberra House which will be opening up in September this year.”

“Ronald McDonald House is designed to help the families of seriously ill children in our region, to be able to team up with the Raiders is a great way to raise funds and brighten up the lives for these unfortunate families.”

Preview:

The Canberra Raiders claimed first place on the Toyota Cup ladder last round with their win over the Panthers and will be looking to stay at the top when they play the 6th placed Roosters this Saturday.

With only 3 games left in the regular season, the Raiders would have to be hot favorites to take out the NYC minor premiership, but it won't be easy with games against the 2nd and 3rd placed Bulldogs and Warriors coming up after the match against the Roosters. All three games are must win if Canberra want to win the minor premiership and start the finals on top.

The Raiders weren't at their best last game against the Panthers and will need to improve in order to continue their winning ways against the three top 8 sides they face to finish the season.

Oh boy the last two Toyota Cup games are going to be BIG! We play 2nd and 3rd in a row which will decide the minor premiership, I'm betting it comes down to the winner of Raiders V Warriors in round 26, that will be like a mini grand final! Can't wait!

Canberra Raiders v Sydney Roosters
Canberra Stadium
Saturday 5.30pm

It’s a much-used cliché we know but it’s definitely do-or-die time for the Jekyll-and-Hyde Raiders in the nation’s capital on Saturday, with victory over the even more enigmatic Roosters essential if Canberra are to remain relevant in this year’s premiership.

The Green Machine kept their season on life support with a 20-10 win over lowly Penrith last Sunday; however, the scratchy effort – they missed 54 tackles throughout – would hardly have the top sides quaking in their boots. It was a far cry from their 28-12 win over the Broncos a fortnight ago, or their 36-4 win over the Sharks in Round 20 – but importantly where there’s life, there’s hope.

Meanwhile the Roosters became the latest victims of the resurgent Eels last Saturday, although their 36-22 loss was as much about their taking their foot of the gas as it was about Parramatta rallying. The tricolours looked like running away with the contest when they scored two quick tries shortly after halftime to grab the lead, but frustratingly they relaxed to let Chris Sandow engineer the home side’s comeback.

The lacklustre performance was worlds away from the dedication and flair they exhibited when destroying the Dragons the week before – something under-the-pump coach Brian Smith would be drilling home to his charges at training this week.

Mitchell Aubusson could be their lucky charm this week – he’s chasing his 50th career victory in his 111th game. Tellingly he has sung the team song five times from six games against the Green Machine, including twice from three games in Canberra.

The Raiders will be boosted by the return of prop Dane Tilse this week; his inclusion pushes Steve Mataora to the bench.
Meanwhile Brian Smith has made just the one change to the Roosters’ line-up, with Jack Bosden to start in the second row and Brad Takairangi benched. Nafe Seluini and Lama Tasi are the new faces on their bench.

Watch Out Raiders: Roosters offloads could put the Raiders to the sword – the tricolours rank third for second-phase play, averaging 12 offloads per game. Meanwhile Canberra rank rock bottom for conceding offloads, coincidentally leaking 12 a game. The biggest threats will be posed by forwards Frank-Paul Nuuausala (29) and Brad Takairangi (23).

If the Raiders don’t work for each other in defence on their left-hand side of the field they could very well be planning their end-of-season holiday after this weekend. Canberra have been clueless there on occasions, leaking a mammoth 45 tries to oppositions down this edge region.

Danger Sign: Any time the Roosters work their way into the Raiders’ 10-metre zone – Canberra have conceded more tries from inside 10 metres than any team (58). Wrapping up a threatening runner close to the line has been tough for them – they’ve conceded five tries to an offload from close range (fourth most).

Watch Out Roosters: Josh McCrone is an understated playmaker who will leave his mark if given time to think and room to move. McCrone has provided 17 line-break assists and 13 try assists to date.

The Raiders’ back three of Josh Dugan, Reece Robinson and Sandor Earl needs to be contained. Dugan is good for 141 metres a match, while wingers Robinson and Earl each plough out 127 metres every 80 minutes. Throw in centre Blake Ferguson’s 125 metres a match and 95 tackle busts, plus Jarrod Croker’s try-scoring feats, and the Raiders are a lethal proposition out wide.

The tricolours have been their own worst enemies at times this season – it’s no surprise to see they’re the worst side in the comp for making errors, with a whopping 11.6 on average. They won’t get much of a leg-up from their opponent this week – Canberra are the most disciplined with the ball in hand, registering just nine errors a game.

The Roosters’ forwards need to muscle up and dominate up front if they’re a chance here – they have struggled for territory all year, making the fewest metres of all teams each week. There’s upside for them though: they also limit oppositions to the fewest metres made against them each game. If they can pound out a territorial dominance early they can keep the pressure on.

Danger Sign: If Josh McCrone gets the radar right on his attacking kicks it could pay off big time. The Roosters have conceded 21 tries to kicks, the third most to date. Meanwhile Canberra have scored 22 tries off the boot (second most). McCrone came up with two try assists dropping the Steeden onto his foot against the Panthers last week.

Jarrod Croker v Shaun Kenny-Dowall: This head-to-head battle between left centre Croker and right centre Kenny-Dowall may decide the outcome. Croker has been in devastating form in attack in 2012, scoring 16 tries (equal most by a centre) and punching through defences on 14 occasions (eighth most by any player). He will be tough to contain when given space within 30 metres of the Roosters’ line. Meanwhile the chooks play their best footy when Kenny-Dowall is on the boil – something that’s been a little infrequent in 2012. If the Kiwi can dig deep and show aggression when running the football he could create migraines for Croker who can still be patchy with his defensive reads. SK-D has tallied 61 tackle busts and 17 offloads from his 14 games.

Where It Will Be Won: Going on with the job after halftime. Both teams have struggled to get back into contests after trailing at halftime, so the scoreline at oranges could indicate who is heading for the win. The Roosters have won just one of 12 games after trailing at halftime in 2012. Meanwhile the Raiders have fared only marginally better with two wins after trailing at the break in 11 matches.

The History: Played 52; Roosters 29, Raiders 23. The Roosters have won five of the past eight clashes, although the Raiders hold a 9-6 advantage at Canberra Stadium. Neither side has ever held the other scoreless.

The Last Time They Met: The Roosters downed the Raiders 14-8 in a lacklustre meeting at Allianz Stadium in Round 3.

The Raiders looked on song when Shaun Berrigan (7th minute) and Jarrod Croker (16th minute) scored to open up a commanding 8-nil lead before Roosters skipper Braith Anasta crossed five minutes before halftime to bridge the gap to just two points at oranges.

Roosters interchange Daniel Mortimer crossed on the hour after some good lead-up work from Shaun Kenny-Dowall down the right edge, with Anasta’s conversion securing the home side a 12-8 lead. A penalty goal with two minutes remaining rounded out the scoring.

Powerful running (six line-breaks) and prolific second phase (19 offloads) was the key for the Roosters, who otherwise struggled to build pressure throughout the afternoon – they registered a woeful 53 per cent completions rate and staggering 21 errors.

Meanwhile falling of the tackles that mattered cruelled the Raiders’ chances – they missed 38 overall. They were also dealt a body blow when they lost fullback Josh Dugan to injury just 14 minutes after kick-off.

Anthony Minichiello (202 metres) and BJ Leilua (five offloads) were the tri-colours’ best players, while Blake Ferguson (153 metres and seven tackle busts) kept the Raiders in the hunt.

Match Officials: Referees – Shayne Hayne & Alan Shortall; Sideline Officials – Ricky MacFarlane & Nick Beashel; Video Referee – Paul Mellor.

The Way We See It: Given the rollercoaster form lines of each side in 2012 you certainly wouldn’t want to stake your life on predicting the winner of this match. However, at home, and still with a glimmer of hope about making the semi-finals, it has to be the Raiders. Canberra by eight points.

Televised: Fox Sports 2 – Live 5.30pm.

Pick us: Furner asks fans to choose Raiders over Giants in code clash

Greater Western Sydney has called for a think tank with the ACT Brumbies and Canberra Raiders to prevent future scheduling clashes in Canberra.

Giants and Raiders games will be played on the same day in the capital for the first time this year on Saturday.

The Raiders host the Sydney Roosters in a do-or-die contest at 5.30pm, while the Giants take on the Demons in an AFL clash of the cellar-dwellers from 2.10pm.

GWS boss David Matthews yesterday declared that's "not in the best interests of Canberra", and believes the city's national football sides should unite to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Bottom Line

The Sydney Roosters will be looking to build on a promising performance against the Eels in Round 23 to get a win over the Raiders at Canberra Stadium on Saturday.

The Roosters looked good for large portions against the Eels, with the Tricolours determined to put on a complete performance against a Raiders side still within earshot of making the top eight.

Once again the key for the Roosters will be the running game of Mitchell Pearce. The young halfback has been sensational the past fortnight, and with his large and powerful forward pack laying the platform, expect Pearce to be at his absolute best against the Raiders halves combination.

Jack Bosden also makes his first start for the Roosters after excelling in recent weeks adding some grunt to the Tricolours side, while Daniel Mortimer moves back to NSW Cup.

With their finals hopes on the line, the Raiders side won't make the task easy for the Roosters, with a come from behind win against the Panthers spurring the Green Machine on this week.

The Raiders also face minimal changes to their squad with only Dane Tilse coming back into the side after missing Round 23.

Overall, this match looms as an attacking fiesta with both sides liking to use the ball wide on a consistent basis. The Raiders will be motivated to keep their season alive, but look for the Roosters to have to much power through the middle, and out wide to come away with the victory.

The words Mitchell Pearce and sensational should never be used in the same sentence. Ever! Rather than sensational he is QLD origin's best friend.
