Peter Wallace kicks decisive field goal as Brisbane edge out Canberra

Halfback Peter Wallace proves the hero with a golden point extra-time field goal as Brisbane Broncos beat Canberra 25-24 at Suncorp Stadium.

Wallace potted the one-pointer early in the tackle count to settle a match the Broncos seemingly had in their keeping until the final 16 minutes.

The home side were coasting at 24-0 as late as the 64th muinute before the much-maligned Raiders decided to mount their comeback.

They scored four tries in an amazing nine-minute period to level proceedings but couldn't apply the finishing touches despite enjoying much of the possession.

Replacement forward Josh Papalli barged over from close range to get the Raiders on the board in the 64th minute, but even then it seemed as though it would only be a consolation.

But the home side were wilting badly and conceded another try to Papalii three minutes later and further four-pointers to replacement Glen Buttriss and centre Jarrod Crocker.

Earlier, the Broncos, minus Origin stars Darren Lockyer, Sam Thaiday, Jharal Yow Yeoh, Corey Parker and Ben Hannant, looked untouchable as they raced to an 18-0 half-time lead.

Tries to Alex Glenn and Dale Copley opened up a 10-0 lead as early as the 15th minute and another try from centre Gerard Beale four minutes before the break gave the home side an 18-0 lead.

The game looked over when fullback Josh Hoffman dashed over for their fourth try nine minutes into the second half but somehow the Raiders rallied.

The absence of brisbane's star players ensured 22-year-old Glenn became the youngest Broncos captain in their 23-year history.

But it looked like he would remember the match for all the wrong reasons.

A half-time spray from Canberra coach David Furner looked to have worked a treat as the Raiders stormed back.

Furner gave his error-riddled side both barrels at half-time, imploring his side to "show pride in the jersey''.

It was just the second win in 13 games by the Broncos without their talisman Lockyer.

Canberra have won only two of their past 17 games in Queensland.
