Relocating their entire squad interstate to avoid the bushfires has cost the Canberra Raiders $85,000 – but the drastic measure could prove priceless when it comes to the club going one better in the NRL this year.

Raiders officials have happily paid the five-figure sum to shift the entire playing group to the Sunshine Coast for 10 days while the nation's capital continues to be blanketed in smoke.

Canberra boss Don Furner said he dreaded to think what could have happened to the start of the Green Machine's latest campaign had they remained at home and lost two vital weeks of training because of the weather conditions that have devastated the country's east coast.

While plenty of Sydney clubs have had to contend with haze and smog – and plenty of players deserve praise for doing their bit to help with the various bushfire appeals – no other club has been forced to take the drastic action and move more than 1300 kilometres like the Raiders. READ MORE:
