Canberra Raiders rookie centre Jeremy Hawkins is keen to extend his stay in the national capital and his management has initiated talks this week about securing a new contract.

Hawkins, 21, will make his long-awaited NRL debut against the Sharks at Cronulla on Sunday. Hawkins was denied an NRL start last month when the NRL refused to give Canberra an exemption for their second-tier salary cap, but further injury has opened the doot for the former Junior Kiwis international.

Hawkins is contracted to the Raiders until the end of 2015, but his manager, former New Zealand coach Frank Endacott, said he was looking to commit to Canberra earlier.

"I've asked (Raiders recruitment manager David Hamilton) if he wants to talk now about extending his contract," Endacott said. "I've already started the ball rolling there."
