Ivan Cleary has marked his first match in charge of the Wests Tigers with a 26-16 victory over North Queensland, who lost Johnathan Thurston to a leg injury late in the match in Townsville.
Thurston limped off the field with the assistance of the Cowboys trainers during the final few minutes of the encounter to sour the night even further for the hosts.
Cleary, who was announced as Jason Taylor's replacement on Monday, guided the Tigers to just their second victory of the season via a five tries to three display.
The Tigers had led 20-12 until the 74th minute when Coen Hess crashed over for the Cowboys to close the gap on the scoreboard to four points, but the visitors iced the win when Jack Littlejohn crossed the stripe in the dying stages.
Ava Seumanufagai, Elijah Taylor, David Nofoaluma and Matt McIllwrick posted the Tigers' earlier tries, while Mitchell Moses landed three conversions for the evening.
