Raiders NYC have great win over Titans

The Canberra Raiders NYC team has had a convincing 40-22 win over the Gold Coast Titans at Skilled Park.

The Raiders looked good in the very attack oriented match with halfback Mitchell Cornish a standout for the second week in a row.

The Raiders came out firing in the first half with five-eighth Mitchell Cronin scoring down the right side in just the fourth minute after hooker Ben Picker charged down a Titans kick. Picker then scooped up the ball and passed in one motion sending Cornish over in just his second NYC game.

The Raiders continued to roll forward in the hot conditions when some impressive footwork from halfback Mitchell Cornish saw him in space and sending the ball wide to newly signed centre Edrick Lee who showed impressive pace as he strode to the try line.

Cornish was in the action again just minutes later, throwing a superb cutout pass to winger Brad Smith who dove over in the corner. Cornish added the extras and the Raiders we up 16-nil in as many minutes.

Just as it looked like the Raiders would run away with the match the Titans rallied scoring two quick tries to Caleb Binge and Hymel Hunt. The extreme heat was definitely playing a part as the first half wore on and the match tightened up.

Both teams got a try just before half time with Jack Ahern running a great line off Cornish for the Raiders. Five-eighth Matt Beddow crossed the line for the Titans with just seconds on the clock sending the two sides to the sheds with Raiders leading 22-16.

Both sides came out aggressively in the second half trading blows until Smith scored his second try on the back of some beautifully interchanged passes between numerous players.

Tries to Joe Bradley and Shannon Boyd continued the Raiders momentum as the half progressed. Boyd's try was extremely impressive with the 123kg monster carrying 4 defenders with him as he stormed over the line taking the score to 36-16.

A nice solo effort from Sam Johnson bought the scores closer but errors didn't allow the Titans to apply enough pressure with Michael Chee-Kam barging over for the Raiders shortly after.

Tom Guymer scored a consolidation try for the Titans late in the game, but it was a case of too little too late and the Raiders took the points in a very entertaining, action packed encounter 40-22.

The best for the Raiders were Cornish, Lee and Picker whilst Prop Caleb Binge was outstanding for the Titans.
