Relations between spectators and Canberra rugby league referees tumbled to a new low yesterday when touch judge Garth Widdowson was targeted by a water bottle thrown from the crowd.
Head referee Rod Cranston momentarily stopped play midway through the second half of the Queanbeyan Blues' 32-25 major semi-final win over Belconnen United, threatening to end the contest if there was a repeat of the incident.
