Master coach Tim Sheens still remembers the day he brought Quentin Pongia into big time rugby league at the Canberra Raiders in 1993.
Pongia, who died on Saturday aged 48 after a long battle with cancer, may never have been discovered but for Sheens’ persistence.
“I saw both him and [fellow prop] John Lomax in the Pacific Cup playing for the Maoris and wanted them both,” Sheens recalled.
