Raiders stars here to tackle bullying

THEY usually do their tackling on the field, but this week players from the Canberra Raiders did some tackling of a different kind.

Six players from the Raiders, including Captain Terry Campese, travelled to schools across the region to tackle bullying.

On Friday they visited Cooma North, St Patrick's Parish, Cooma Public and Monaro High Schools to deliver an anti-bullying message. Campese said with one in four children having being bullied and only half of those reporting it, the message was about letting kids know its important to "get it off your chest".

He said the response from the students had been positive.

"It's been surprising. We have a DVD that we play for the kids. They all pay attention, taking it all board," he said.

"If it helps a few children then we've done our job."

Thursday afternoon was spent with young local rugby league players for a fun training clinic at Nijong Oval.

Campese said the best part about getting out into local communities was making kids happy.

The visit was part of the NRL's community carnival

More than 350 players from all 16 NRL clubs will travel more than 40,000km across four countries during the 28 days of the Community Carnival. They will deliver important lessons on the effects of bullying and the importance of building positive self-esteem through a powerful DVD and other resources.
