Mataora's Courage Inspires Teammates

Canberra coach David Furner has lauded Sam Mataora's courage as ''pretty special'' after the Raiders forward defied a serious finger injury to play in Saturday's win over the Roosters.

Mataora will today undergo surgery to repair ruptured tendons on his right ring finger, and will miss the rest of the season.

The 21-year-old is shattered his part in the Raiders' resurgence has been cut short, but he risks losing the use of his finger if he doesn't go under the knife.

''He's actually torn the tendon, if you don't get it now you probably can't rescue it,'' Furner said yesterday. ''He was able to give us one game, I thought that was pretty special.''
