The North Canberra Bears have defeated the Harden Hawks 36-16 in a rematch of last season’s George Tooke Shield Grand Final.

Despite being placed fifth on the ladder and averaging only slightly more than 20 points a game this season, the Bears looked slick as they managed to defeat the second place Hawks.

Harden managed to seize the early momentum in the match when prop Chris Salway crashed over to score in the sixth minute.

The Bears hung on and changed the course of the game when fullback Kirk Patton ran the length of the field after picking up a loose ball.

With halftime looming, the Bears scored two tries leading up to the break to take a well-earned 16-6 lead and never looked back.

The Hawks started the second half in determined fashion and looked threatening through centre Jonathan Pouono before halfback Nathan Schofield stepped with way through the Bears defence to score.

With 15 minutes to go and with Harden attempting to salvage a result, the Bears upped the tempo and managed to cross the tryline another three times to ensure the two competition points.

The win moves the Bears up to fourth on the ladder while Harden drop to third position as they head into the bye.
