Magpies move to George Tooke Shield

The Yass Magpies will drop out of the senior division of the Canberra Raiders Cup for next season, instead fielding a team for the George Tooke Shield competition.

The huge budgets of Canberra sides and the departure of a number of players meant Yass couldn’t be competitive in the higher divisions next year.

Local magpie Scott Waters agreed to lead the team into the new venture. He has put together a mix of current and former players for the task.

The committee is enthusiastic about the decision and is looking forward to a positive and competitive 2013.

The decision means the Yass side will take on neighbours Binalong along with other smaller towns.

Although compacting the first grade and reserve grade into one team, the Magpies will also field an under 18s team in the Canberra Raiders Cup.
