Huawei re-signs with Canberra Raiders: “Let’s get the NRL on the wei to China” Huawei Australia and the Canberra Raiders today announced that Huawei has re-signed as the team’s major sponsor for the 2014 NRL season. The sponsorship agreement was announced this morning in Canberra, with both Huawei and the Raiders determined to see the NRL play a match in the 2014 season in Huawei’s hometown of Shenzhen, China.
Huawei Corporate Affairs Director Jeremy Mitchell said he hoped the sponsorship renewal would add weight to the push for the first 2014 NRL match to be hosted in China. “As China’s most successful global company, Huawei would love to see Shenzhen Stadium filled with our 65,000 China-based staff – with all of them backing the Raiders!,” he said.
“The Canberra Raiders were Huawei’s first major sports sponsorship anywhere in the world when we first signed up in 2012, and we’re excited to have the Huawei logo front and centre on the Raiders jersey for another big season,” said Mr Mitchell.
Canberra Raiders CEO Don Furner said the Raiders were thrilled to have Huawei back on board for another season and said the club would work hard to try and see the NRL expand into China for the first time.
“We are absolutely elated to have Huawei renew their sponsorship with the club, with their international profile putting the Raiders on the world map,” said Mr Furner. “We are working hard behind the scenes on getting the Raiders to China to play in Shenzhen in what would be a piece of rugby league history and we could not make it happen without the wonderful support of Huawei.”
Huawei and the Raiders have submitted a joint proposal to the NRL regarding a game in China, as well as holding informal discussions with a range of stakeholders to build momentum behind the plan.
Huawei first signed up as the Raider’s major sponsor at the beginning of the 2012 Season, which saw the Raiders have a strong finish in the top-8. The initial contract was for a two-season sponsorship with an option to extend for an additional season – an option which Huawei has enthusiastically taken up.
