Error-ridden Raiders fall to Tigers

CANBERRA RAIDERS 0

An error-ridden performance has seen the Canberra Raiders fall to the Wests Tigers at Canberra Stadium 40-0.

In atrocious conditions, the Raiders had some early opportunities, but made too many errors to put pressure on the Tigers line.

Captain David Shillington put in a courageous performance for the Green Machine, with 11 hit-ups and 29 tackles, but it wasn’t enough at the Tigers ran out convincing victors.

Wet conditions meant a scrappy start to the game, as both sides committed handling errors and wasted golden opportunities to score.

It was the Tigers who took control, crossing through Curtis Sironen in the 14th minute as he carried three Raiders over the line to score for a 6-0 lead. Benji Marshall extended the lead in the 20th minute from a penalty goal after Shaun Fensom was caught accidentally offside from a spilled bomb.

The Tigers managed another 2 tries before the break through Robbie Farah and Ben Murdoch-Masila, as the Raiders made too many handling errors to create any pressure and trailed 20-0.

A good grubber from halfback Josh McCrone in the 34th minute forced a repeat set, and had the Tigers line in some danger, but another simple handling error released the pressure and gave the Tigers the ball back, and a 20-0 half time deficit.

The second half didn’t start much better for the Raiders, with an error in their first set followed by a try to Beau Ryan, before Ryan set up a try for Chris Lawrence in the 47th minute with a big cross field run and grubber to the corner. There was a hint of an obstruction in the lead up to the try, but the video referee awarded it.

The Raiders created some pressure with three repeat sets in the 53rd minute, but another error lifted it on the Tigers, and they extended their lead to 34-0 in the 65th minute when Matt Utai crossed.

A try to Liam Fulton rounded off the scoring, with the Tigers running out winners 40-0.

Best for the Raiders were David Shillington, Reece Robinson and Shaun Fensom, while for the Tigers, the best were Benji Marshall, Aaron Woods and Beau Ryan.
