Shillo: One of the worst losses we’ve had here at home

Shillington disappointed for Raiders fans

Raiders captain David Shillington said that Canberra’s 40-0 loss to the Wests Tigers was one of the worst he’s experienced at home.

The Raiders were unable to hold onto the ball for long periods, and failed to create pressure as the Tigers took full advantage of a 61% share of possession.

Shillington said he felt slightly embarrassed by the result, particularly at home.

“(It’s) one of the worst losses we’ve had here at home,” Shillington said.

“It’s disappointing having your fans come out and brave the wet and cold, and we turned up a bad loss.

“We just have to rip in at training this week and get ready for Newcastle.”

The prop said that it came down to the individual players and silly errors.

“I think…it’s that individual accountability with errors and penalties as well,” he said.

“We wanted to put the pressure on them, but each time we gave away a cheap penalty and let them off their line.

“Also our goal line defence was pretty soft tonight.

“We did a fair bit of work on it at training during the week, and we looked really good with it too and that wasn’t transferred into the game today.”

Coach David Furner said that he wasn’t going to use injuries to key players as an excuse, agreeing with Shillington that it came down to each player assessing his game.

“They’re certainly key players (missing),” Furner said.

“But we’re not going to use that as an excuse.

“We need to fix it straight away.

“It’s individual accountability that needs to be fixed.”
