Slow start hurts Titans Under-20s

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans Under-20s have gone down 40-24 in their opening home match against the Canberra Raiders at Skilled Park today.

For the second week in a row, a tardy start came back to haunt the Titans after the home side gave up an early 16-0 lead early in the first half.

The Titans again showed plenty of heart to fight their way back into the match trailing by just 22-16 at the break, but the deficit proved to much to reel in.

The Titans crossed for five tries for the match through Caleb Binge (24min), Hymel Hunt (28min), Matt Beddow (40min), Sam Johnson (62min) and Tom Guymer (73min).

The Titans were on the back foot early in the match after tries to Canberra five-eighth Mitchell Cronin and centre Edrick Lee had the visitors leading 10-0 after as many minutes.

The points continued for the Raiders with winger Brad Smith crossing to extend their lead to 16 points before the Titans began their charge with tries to Binge and Hunt.

The Titans were back in the match trailing by just six points at the break but three Raiders tries in the space of eight minutes after halftime put the nail in the coffin for the home side.

Johnson and Guymer crossed for second half tries for the Titans to reduce the final margin.

The Titans will be searching for their first win for the year against Melbourne next Saturday at Skilled Park while the Raiders are two wins from two matches.
