Disgraced NRL star signs with brother's super league club Warrington Updated at  6:16 am today

The Warrington super league club have won the race for the signature of disgraced Canberra Raiders centre Joel Monaghan.

The 28-year-old former Kangaroo, who resigned from the NRL's Raiders to spare them any further embarrassment over the publication on the internet of a lewd photograph, has signed a 12-month contract with the Wolves.

His opportunity to play alongside older brother Michael, the Warrington hooker, came after fellow Australian, Chris Hicks, announced his immediate retirement, thus creating space on both the club's overseas quota and salary cap.

Monaghan was pursued by a host of Super League clubs after deciding to spend 2011 in Europe to get away from the storm of publicity at home.

He spoke to Castleford coach Terry Matterson, a former assistant at Canberra, and also visited Catalans Dragons but was already training with Warrington and jumped at the chance to play alongside his brother.

Monaghan won five caps for Australia, including the 2008 World Cup final, and also played twice for New South Wales in State of Origin.

Hicks, 33, reversed a decision to hang up his boots earlier this year when he signed a new 12-month contract but has now decided to revert to his earlier decision, which was based on his wife's career as a teacher.

Good luck for the rest of your career Joel. Nice to see he will get to finish with his bro too.

A nice twist to see him end up playing with his brother to finish his career after all. As far as outcomes for Monas go I think this is about as good as it could have got. All the best for the rest buddy.

Good. A lot of us were quite worried about his mental state after all this drama, I know I was anyway. Its great that he will have family around him OS and has a club that is willing to take him.

Maybe we will see him in green again one day but its gonna be hard for him to find his spot again with all this young talent coming along in leaps and bounds. A tough lesson to learn and a good one for younger blokes to take note of. Good luck Mons, will probably kill it in SL.

Good riddance. We don't need scummy people at our club. Good to see the club is making a stand of late and weeding out the dregs.

Sure what Monas did was stupid and disgusting but to call him a dreg is going too far. He knows what he did was wrong and jumped before he was pushed. He gets a lot of respect from me for standing up and copping it all on the chin.
