Waddell returns to Indigenous All Stars27 December 2010, 1:00 amAs a fiercely proud indigenous Australian, Travis Waddell rates representing the Indigenous All Stars last year as one of the proudest moments of his life. The Canberra hooker will get to relive that cherished experience when he plays in the second instalment of the concept on the Gold Coast in February.
Given his public profile, Waddell views himself as a role model for the indigenous community. It is why he paid a visit to Canberra's Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Service in August, to help launch the NRL's ''Close the Gap'' round. Some sportspeople detest being slapped with the role model tag, but Waddell relishes it.
''I like doing stuff like that, and am doing a bit with the Raiders now,'' Waddell said.
''I go to the PCYC's and detention centre, and play sport like touch footy and basketball with them.'' Fellow Raiders Joel Thompson and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs will also line up for the Indigenous All Stars for the second straight season. On February 12, the star-laden side will look to repeat last year's first-up 16-12 victory over the NRL All Stars.
''I'm very proud of my indigenous background, so I'm pretty honoured to play in this game again,'' Waddell said.
Waddell is signed to Canberra until the end of the 2012 season.
