Canberra wants ANZAC Test match

CANBERRA Raiders boss Don Furner is poised to submit an application to host the ANZAC Day Test match at Canberra Stadium next year.

The Raiders chief believes the Australia verses New Zealand match would be a huge coup for the city which celebrates its centenary year.

“We had a good meeting with the government yesterday and Canberra Stadium and we’ve had some preliminary talks with the NRL,” Furner told ABC Canberra.

“We have to put a submission in by the end of this month, there are other cities vying to host it.

"But we think a stand-alone Friday night game in Canberra’s centenary year next year would be fantastic.

“We’ve never had a Test match here, I think it would sell-out.

“It’s the only game on that round and hopefully a week of other festivities which would happen leading up to that game.”

Furner said he hopes to put his submission to the ARLC by the end of the month and should know whether they were successful in their bid by July.

“There are other cities vying to host it,” he said.

“The NRL said they should only take another month to make their decision so we should know by July.

With no financial cost expected to be incurred onto the city, Furner believes securing the ANZAC Test would be made into a giant weeklong event.

“Perhaps the footy show would look at coming down the Thursday night before it,” he said.

“There’d be a fair bit to do.

“Financially it will pay for itself.

“They sell ticket to the footy show, with a sell-out as long as it’s over 20,000 it won’t cost the city anything.

“It sells itself with the corporate hospitality and a few other events.”
