Monaghan faces the axe today
9 November 2010, 12:00 am

CANBERRA seem certain to sack Joel Monaghan today despite Raiders players hoping he will be spared the axe.

Monaghan may even confirm he will quit the club before the board meeting, which was scheduled for yesterday but will now be held this afternoon. Monaghan's manager Jim Banaghan will attend the meeting.

Canberra players want Monaghan retained but the club is likely to ignore their calls based on the threat that sponsors may walk away if the former Test player is retained.

But Canberra CEO Don Furner said the players would be able to have their say.

It is unknown whether the NRL will immediately intervene should the club decide against sacking Monaghan.

"We've given Joel some time to meet with his manager before the meeting and we'll also make sure the playing group has the opportunity to give their thoughts before making any decision on his future," Furner said. "I would also like to take this opportunity to clear up Joel's current position. He has not resigned from the club and the board has not yet determined an outcome on his future."
