Don Furner - Members make some strong points

Canberra Raiders CEO Don Furner took the initiative and opened up to loyal Raiders Members on Thursday morning praising them for their passion and concern on club issues.

Speaking on www.raiders.com.au, Furner was up-front and honest with the Canberra faithful, giving them a chance to discuss many issues facing the club as it nears the halfway point of the season.

A focal point of the conversation was the retention of the current crop of outstanding youngsters, a problem the club has faced in recent seasons.

“Losing our young talent is a constant frustration and battle for us,” Furner explained. “One of the pitfalls of having a successful development program is that players such as Edrick Lee, Josh Papalii, Mitch Cornish are always targets.”

“Our SG Ball making the Grand Final highlights our program’s success, and without a doubt they will be targeted in the future as well. We would love to keep all our juniors, but unfortunately it’s not possible.”

The CEO also answered questions on Coach David Furner, saying the club needs to perform better as a whole.

“All positions at the club, including head coach are under constant review,” Don Furner said. “We are also disappointed with the results and are working hard to get things back on track.

“Our board is of the opinion that changing one person is not going to magically make us win more games. Instead we're investing our time into who we have, and what they are working on. We all have to work hard as a club, which I can assure we are.”

Furner also touched on the importance of the Raiders support base saying the club is always looking to improve communication between themselves and the fans.

“One big thing we’ve been working on is engaging more with our Members and fans. The 100-4-100 initiative is a big one and has been so successful - we will look at doing a similar program each year going forward.

“The feedback from fans who have been a part of it has been great, and it’s also opened up the lines of communication between Members and the club.”
