Blake Ferguson

The Sydney Roosters plan to use Blake Ferguson’s enforced holiday to lock the former NSW State of Origin centre into a long-term contract extension.

Ferguson, who is set to miss up to four months after injuring his right foot in the Roosters’ win over his former side Canberra at the weekend, is off contract at the end of the year and his name has been circulated to rival clubs.

Roosters chief executive Brian Canavan confirmed talks had begun last week with Ferguson’s manager Sam Ayoub and both parties were keen to extend their association beyond this season.

“We have commenced informal negotiations with Sam Ayoub and we expressed a desire to have him at the club,” Canavan said. “Sam said he wanted to stay. Both the club and the player are on the same page. His progress since coming to the club has been as good as we hoped.”
