A hat trick from star back Anthony Milford has helped the Canberra Raiders Holden Cup side to a 40-22 victory over the St George Illawarra Dragons this afternoon at Canberra Raiders.
Playing at fullback, the Souths Logan junior was virtually untouchable in the Raiders’ first home game of the season, setting up two tries on top of the three he scored himself.
Coach Mick Mantelli was required to make couple of team changes coming into the game. Regular captain Mitch Cornish was omitted after playing NSW Cup for Mounties on Saturday afternoon, but this allowed utility back Jack Ahearn to make his return from injury at five eighth. Similarly, winger Trae Clarke was a late withdraw and his spot was taken by Jonathan Kent.
The Raiders were on the attack early when a short pass from Scott Doyle put centre Jack Creith into a yawning gap. However, Creith was then illegally shoulder charged by his opposite number Yaw Kiti Glymin 20 metres out from the Dragons’ line.
