Brian Smith is set to return to coaching with the United States team at the end-of-season World Cup and may be a candidate for the vacant Canberra job.
Smith, who is one of the most experienced coaches in the game's history, is the type of disciplinarian many feel may be needed at the Raiders and he had links with Canberra after working this year as a defensive coach for Australia's top Super Rugby franchise, the Brumbies.
He has accepted the US Tomahawks job after Matthew Elliott stood down to focus on the Warriors.
