Dragon Young Desperately Seeks End to Raiders Hoodoo

Young desperately seeks end to old Canberra jinx

DEAN YOUNG is out to end his Canberra hoodoo tomorrow night and kick-start St George Illawarra's fading finals hopes.

The Dragons have not won in the ACT since 2000 and have lost their last six games against the Raiders. The 28-year-old lock has never won in the nation's capital and is hoping a more focused and consistent team performance will bring an end to his long-running jinx.

''It hasn't been pretty, the last couple of years and we're sitting 10th now and when you're sitting in that position you can't worry about other sides, you just have to worry about yourselves,'' Young said. ''For the top of the competition, you can probably focus on other teams because you've got your stuff in order but we're not where we want to be so we just have to focus on us this week.''

With conditions expected to favour the hosts tomorrow night, Young has dismissed the near sub-zero temperature as a reason for their near 12-year losing streak in Canberra. ''The field's the same size, you can come up with a million excuses but we're not interested in that,'' Young, who is retiring at the end of the season, said.

The Dragons narrowly beat Gold Coast in Wollongong last weekend. The team's performance in the two-point win, along with their second-half showing the previous week against the Bulldogs, has been set as the benchmark for the rest of the season by rookie coach Steve Price.

The Dragons have the worst attacking record in the league and despite playing against the team with the third-worst defence, they are not expecting the Raiders to provide an easy end to their try-scoring woes.

''We're not happy with where we are on the table. We don't have the luxury of focusing on other sides, looking at their weaknesses and their strengths. Our whole week's focus has been on how we're going to prepare,'' Young said.
