CANBERRA BEAT WESTS TIGERS 40-18 IN NYC

Wests Tigers suffered a 40-18 loss to Canberra Raiders at Campbelltown Sports Stadium tonight in round three of the Toyota Cup competition.

Five-eighth Curtis Sironen lasted just three minutes in his comeback game from injury, leaving the field with a suspected broken nose.

The Raiders opened the scoring in the 5th minute when winger Sami Sauiluma stepped and weaved past two defenders to score in the left corner for a 4-0 lead. Winger Chris Medcalf converted from the sideline for a 6-0 lead.

Wests Tigers prop Neil Begovich charged his way over the line in the 15th minute after good support play by hooker Pat Politoni and full-back Limoni Kamuta. Half-back Jacob Miller converted from next to the posts for a 6-6 scoreline.

Canberra second-rower Josh Papalii then scored a fine try when he beat four defenders in a 30 metre run to score next to the posts. Medcalf converted for a 12-6 lead after 23 minutes.

Two minutes later, Medcalf crossed for his own try in the right corner for a 16-6 lead. Medcalf converted his own try from the sideline for an 18-6 lead.

Wests Tigers hit back immediately through replacement centre Matt Evans when he swooped on a drop ball by Canberra lock Tom Murphy to race 20 metres to score under the posts. Miller converted the try for an 18-12 scoreline after 28 minutes. The score remained that way until half-time.

2nd Half
Canberra stretched their lead in the 43rd minute when Sauiluma scored his second try out wide.Medcalf converted for a 24-12 lead.

Wests Tigers hit back three minutes later when Miller got a perfect bounce from a kick back inside to score under the posts. He converted his own try for a 24-18 scoreline.

Canberra then went to a 30-18 lead when Uiti Baker crashed over for a try next to the posts. Medcalf converted the try.

Sauiluma then dived over for his third try in the left corner for a 34-18 lead after 54 minutes.

Canberra secured victory in the 71st minute when hooker Matt McIlwrick scored behind the posts. Medcalf converted the try for a 40-18 lead.
