The Canberra Raiders Cup kicked off last weekend with the talent on display in all four games portraying just how high a quality of competition the Canberra Raiders Cup truly is.

There were two blow out scores in round one with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and the Woden Valley Rams flexing their muscles over the Belconnen United Scholars and West Belconnen Warriors respectively.

The Roos beat the Scholars 47-18 with Captain-Coach Aaron Gorrell collecting a 16 point haul through one try and six goals whilst former Sydney Roosters 2002 premiership winner Andrew Lomu’s return to the Canberra Raiders Cup was not enough to help the West Belconnen, as the Rams enjoyed a 44-10 win over the Warriors.

Woden centre Tim Crome had a field day against West Belconnen, collecting 24 points through three tries and six goals.

“Tim’s presence on the field gains a reaction from both the opposition and his own side. His line running along with his long kicking game is up there with the best in the competition,” Woden Coach Cameron Hardy said.

“I think it just came off the back of our defence really, we’ve worked really hard all off-season for each other. It paid off today and we racked up some points in the end,” Crome said of the eight-tries-to-two win.

The other two fixtures were both close encounters with former Melbourne Storm and Sydney Rooster hooker James Aubusson’s Goulburn Workers Bulldogs drawing with the Tuggeranong Bushrangers and the Gungahlin Bulls going down narrowly to the Yass Magpies 28-24.

Last year’s runners up the Queanbeyan Blues had the bye.
