Wests Tigers under-20s coach Todd Payten has demanded the second-tier salary cap be radically overhauled after it stalled the first-grade careers of Tigers star Luke Brooks and Raiders playmaker Mitch Cornish this season.
The NRL denied halfback Cornish a first-grade debut in the final round against Cronulla, while Brooks starred in the Tigers' round-23 win over the Dragons before being ordered back to under 20s.
The halfback battle between the pair will be pivotal in Friday's cut-throat semi-final between last year's grand finalists at Allianz Stadium. But Payten said Brooks deserved a chance to entrench himself in first grade after his strong debut, and called for the NRL to exercise more flexibility with the second-tier cap.
