Raiders winger Sandor Earl has revealed that a phone call from coach David Furner, when the Raiders were at rock bottom, convinced him to make the mid-season switch to Canberra.
Earl scored his first career hat-trick of tries in Canberra’s 34-6 win over competition-leaders the Bulldogs on Friday night, adding to what he says has become a ‘‘surreal’’ situation.
The Raiders will guarantee a top-eight berth – and possibly even a home final – if they defeat the Warriors in New Zealand next Sunday.
But when Earl was first sounded out about leaving Penrith for Canberra, it was to join a club reportedly in crisis.
