Raiders review after 2011 disaster

CANBERRA will undertake a massive internal review of the club in an effort to uncover the reasons behind their failure 2011 season.

Manager and Coachat the Australian Sports Commission John Waser is in charge of overseeing the entire review of the Raiders, with the findings of why the club failed to make finals, and finishing 14th to be presented to the Raiders board.

“We are looking at trying to improve the high performance environment and we will be looking at all avenues,” Waser said on Monday.

“The board has given me an open door to see how we can improve the present situation.

“There are a lot of good people within the organisation working hard.

“Of course it’s all about performance... and it comes down to winning we want to make sure we provide that environment to increase the wins on a Saturday afternoon.”

Waser is no stranger to the Raiders family having spent four seasons with the club in an education facilitator capacity for their players.

He has since worked as a sports consultant for national and international sporting bodies.

He will be assisted by former Queensland Origin coach Michael Hagan who will conduct the football side of the investigation.

“He has lots of experience not only with the NRL but with representative teams,” Waser said of Hagan.

With a key focus on football operations, the entire playing squad will be interviewed throughout the process, as will be the coaching and support staff all the way up to CEO Don Furner.

“Any organisation at the end of a season or end of a period will have a review and this review is exactly that but a little more in depth,” he said.

“I’m sure if you talk to everybody from the CEO to the board chair to the captain to head coach it’s been a disappointing year and they are very proud people and want to make the situation better.”

To ensure a thorough examination has been made with recommendations to be made in regards to how the club can be bettered, Waser says he harbours no concerns about people holding back information as they will be provided several options for information to be relayed.

“Everyone I have approached so far has been very open and willing to share information to make the situation better,” he said.

“It’s just not a survey in front of their peers there is a situation to have one on one interviews and also a situation where they will get together in groups and be able to contribute that way.”

And it’s not just the players who will have their says but the 10 - 12,000 members will also be given an opportunity to voice their concerns.

“They are big stakeholders,” Waser said.

“We are just working through to find the best way for them to have their say.”
