Blues boil-over win in the classic Queanbeyan Derby
« on: May 07, 2022, 05:38:11 PM »

An incredible 80 minute performance from the Blues put their rival Kangaroos away in an absolute boil-over 64-10 win at Seiffert Oval in the Queanbeyan derby.

The Kangaroos came out the gates fast and found themselves on the attack early. But, a poorly timed pass was intercepted by Blues centre Ropata Doherty, who ran the field and scored under the sticks to open the scoring.
Captain-coach Terry Campese made no mistake, adding the two extras to take a commanding six-nil lead in the opening ten minutes.

The Blues capitalised on another Roos error, when Campese threw a harbour bridge pass over the top to find Jake Butler-Fleming who drew the opposing winger to put Doherty over for his second of the afternoon. Campese converted to extend the scores to 12-nil.

Campese attacked the Roos left-edge defence again, but this time found Roos winger Cade Woods who intercepted and ran the field. Blues fullback Mat Parsons tracked him down and forced the error to save the try.

The Roos bounced right back when halfback Lachlan Ingram gave some early ball to centre Temple Rupapera, who beat two defenders to score a great solo try. The conversion was unsuccessful, drawing the scores to 12-4 with 15 minutes to go.

The Blues began a scoring rampage, targetting the edges of the Roos defence and running riot.

Campese caught the defence lacking and dummied and broke the line, linking up with his fullback Parsons, who was ankle-tapped just metres from the line.

A quick play-the-ball forced the ball quickly down the short side where winger Bryce Lee finished in the corner. Campese nailed the conversion to extend the lead to 18-4.

The very next set, George Morseu made a break down the left-edge with some great footwork, but was later brought down.

Campese then kicked cross-field to link up with his centre Jake Butler-Fleming, who rose and finished in the opposite corner. Campese continued his perfect day with the boot, adding the extra's to take the score to 24-6.
