Friend feels for mate Furner after sacking

Disgruntled players and a coach sacked out of the blue - it could be a story about either Canberra Raiders legend David Furner or former ACT Brumbies coach Andy Friend. And Friend said a player clean-out might also be needed - but only if the current group was not willing to work hard.

Furner joined Friend as a member of the sacked coaches fraternity on Tuesday, but the two have known each other for more than 25 years. They played together for the ACT schoolboys rugby union side in 1987 and have kept in touch.

One carved out an NRL career, while the other stayed in union.

While Furner was sacked by the Raiders board two days ago, Friend received his marching orders in early 2011. Since then the Brumbies have brought in World Cup-winning coach Jake White, cleaned out their playing roster and climbed back into the Super Rugby play-offs.
