2013 Raiders Holden Cup Backs Review

The Canberra Raiders continued their fine tradition of producing talented youngsters in 2013 with the club’s Holden Cup side winning the minor premiership and coming within a whisker of its second consecutive Grand Final appearance.

A big part of the team’s success this year was its dynamite backline which lit the competition alight during 2013 scoring a plethora of tries while also getting fans to their feet with some amazing feats of speed and skill. Further testament to the team’s backline strength is the fact that three Raiders backs were named in the official Holden Cup along with coach, Mick Mantelli.

Probably the strongest performer in the Raiders backline in 2013 was fullback Jack Ahearn. With Anthony Milford playing the majority of the season in the NRL, and halfback Mitch Cornish spending extended periods in the NSW Cup, Ahearn became the NYC’s side’s key playmaker, a role he excelled in.

Throughout the season Ahearn came up with 30 line break assists (2nd in the league) and 21 try assists (4th in the league). He deservedly won the Raiders’ NYC player’s-player award and was named fullback in the Toyota Cup team-of-the-year.
