The Belconnen Scholars narrowly defeated the Woden Rams 32-30 at Northbourne Oval on Saturday.
Goal kicking proved the difference in the end with both teams scoring six tries, with Belconnen kicking four goals, and the Rams only three.
It looked as though the game was heading for a draw when Woden’s Mitch Barbara scored with several minutes remaining to reduce the deficit to two points.
But the Ram’s Tim Crome missed a difficult conversion which ultimately secured Belconnen victory.
It was the Scholars fifth straight win which has them only one point adrift of the Canberra Raiders Cup pacesetters, Queanbeyan Blues with five rounds remaining.
Belconnen’s Tim Thorley was in fine form for the home side, bagging four tries and always looking dangerous when he ran from dummy half.
Next week the Scholars continue their assault towards the minor premiership when they travel to Goulburn to take on the Bulldogs.
The Rams will face West Belconnen Warriors at home in what is shaping as a must win match for the Woden side.
