Teenage centre Andrew Heffernan earmarked himself as one of the Holden Cup’s most promising prospects after propelling the Raiders to an 18-12 win over St George Illawarra at WIN Stadium.
Canberra trailed the Dragons 6-4 at half time and an upset seemed likely, however, an inspired second half by the Junee Diesels junior saw the Raiders storm back into contest and maintain their lead at the top of the Holden Cup ladder.
The opening 10 minutes were keenly contested with strong defence from both sides seeing play confined mainly to the middle of the field. However, the Dragons took the lead in 15th minute when fullback Evander Cummings crossed after beating five Raiders to score a fine individual try. Halfback Jackson Hastings converted for a 6-0 lead.
Canberra struck back in the 23rd minute when winger Jonathan Rueben scored on the back of quick backline movement down the right. Unfortunately, Mitch Cornish was unable to convert from the right touchline.
