Canberra Raiders assistant Brett Kimmorley has emerged as a potential contender for the vacant Newcastle Knights coaching job next season after he revealed he is interested in the position.

Kimmorley says he is yet to speak to anyone at the Knights but admitted the prospect of returning to his home town to take on a head coaching role after four years as an assistant at Canterbury and the Raiders appealed to him.

The Knights interim advisory board, comprising CEO Matt Gidley, chairman Paul Harragon, NRL adviser John Quayle and two NRL representatives, met on Friday to discuss the criteria to be put in place for the appointment of Wayne Bennett’s successor.

Current Knights assistant and former head coach Rick Stone, Penrith’s NSW Cup coach Garth Brennan, Cowboys assistant Terry Matterson, Gold Coast assistant Neil Henry and current Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter are among the names being bandied around.
