The Tuggeranong Buffaloes have come from behind to defeat the Yass Magpies 22-16 at Greenway Oval on Friday night to secure their first win of the Open Women’s Tackle season.

In front of a boisterous Tuggeranong crowd, the Buffaloes managed to beat the previously undefeated Yass Magpies thanks to a last minute try Amanda Kyburz.

With one minute left on the clock, the Buffaloes rake ran with the ball from dummy half on the last tackle despite having numbers on her outside.

When explaining her try, Kyburz said the reason for her decision was simple.

“They left a gap,” Kyburz said. “I saw it and just went.”

Kyburz ability to convert tries also assisted the Buffaloes gain the two competition points after she converted three of her teams four tries, while Yass were unable to convert any of their four tries.

However, after the opening exchanges of the match it appeared that Yass would walk away the victors after they scored a try in the opening two minutes of the match thanks to Allie Beck.

Although Beck went on to score three tries during the match due to her clever work from dummy half it wasn’t enough as the Buffaloes managed to stay with them every step of the way.

It once again appeared that the Magpies were going to be out of the Buffaloes reach when they moved the ball quickly to the right edge but Tuggeranong managed to bundle the winger out of play just as she appeared to have crossed the line.

“It was beautiful sliding defence,” Kyburz said. “It’s what we’ve been practicing in training so to be able to bring it onto the field is really what we are aiming to do.”

The teams headed into the halftime break with the scores level at 12 all but Yass once again hit the front thanks to Beck.

Under relentless pressure from the Magpies attack, Tuggeranong captain Karen Lyons led her team superbly with a try to change the momentum of the match.

“I knew once that moment happened that their energy would lift and then we lifted each other up,” Lyon said.

With the scores level at 16 all, the Buffaloes piled pressure on the Yass defence before Kyburz capped off her excellent match with the try that gave Tuggeranong their first win in the competition.

“I’m very proud of the girls,” Lyons said. “It’s only up from here [for this team]. There were some girls on this team that played their first game tonight.”
