The coaching merry-go-round

The Brisbane Broncos will be one playmaker short when they take on Manly in Friday night's NRL preliminary final, and the man they want to be Darren Lockyer's long-term replacement will be lining up for the Sea Eagles.

Rookie of the Year Daly Cherry-Evans has begun contract negotiations with Manly, with reports he could be offered a multi-year deal worth around $1 million.

Brisbane and the Sydney Roosters were believed to have been chasing the 21-year-old halfback.

One playmaker who may not be at his club next season is Wests Tigers halfback Robert Lui, who was charged by police with assaulting his girlfriend in the days after his team was knocked out of the title race.

Tigers officials say Lui will vigorously defend the charges, and denied there was pressure to sack the 21-year-old despite meeting with club sponsors during the week.

Meanwhile North Queensland hooker Aaron Payne has signed a new deal with the Cowboys and Raiders five-eighth Josh McCrone has re-signed with Canberra.
