National Rugby League News / Cleary helping Penrith retain and recruit
« Last post by RNA on Today at 04:12:20 AM »
Penrith boss Phil Gould is convinced locking up star halfback Nathan Cleary for the next six years will help the club retain and recruit players and keep their NRL premiership window open.

Cleary on Monday committed to a five-year contract extension, three months after fellow NSW Origin representative Reagan Campbell Gillard penned a similar deal.

"This is a contract built on potential, it comes with great responsibility," said Gould, who described it as the biggest deal he had been been involved in.

National Rugby League News / Smith's defence heads Slater's judiciary
« Last post by RNA on Today at 04:12:20 AM »
Ten years ago on Monday, Sydney lawyer Geoff Bellew unsuccessfully attempted to free Cameron Smith to play in Melbourne's run to the 2008 NRL grand final.

Come Tuesday night, he'll be the man overseeing Billy Slater's hearing for a shoulder charge that threatens to end his NRL career a week early and deny him a fairytale grand final with the Storm.

In a strange twist of fate, Bellew - who has since become a NSW Supreme Court Judge - is now at the end of his fourth season as the NRL's judiciary chairman.

National Rugby League News / Tedesco set to replace Slater as NRL No.1
« Last post by RNA on Today at 04:12:19 AM »
Before Billy Slater hands the baton to James Tedesco as the game's premier fullback, the Sydney Roosters star No.1 hopes they can meet one final time.

Slater's illustrious NRL career may already be over as he on Tuesday night fronts the judiciary to fight a shoulder charge citation.

The Storm will argue his try-saving effort on Sosaia Feki couldn't be avoided and wasn't a traditional shoulder charge as he attempts to be cleared to play in Sunday's grand final against the Roosters.

National Rugby League News / Croft feared grand final chance was gone
« Last post by RNA on Today at 04:12:18 AM »
Not only does Melbourne's Brodie Croft have little NRL experience but he's only ever played in one rugby league grand final - and lost.

The rookie halfback can't stop smiling after helping steer the Storm into Sunday's NRL title decider against the Sydney Roosters.

It's an opportunity the 21-year-old feared he would miss as Melbourne tested three players to find the best fit for the jumper formerly worn by now Roosters No.7 Cooper Cronk.

Penrith CEO Phil Gould has locked horns with Cronulla captain Paul Gallen over the NRL’s decision to charge Billy Slater for a dangerous shoulder charge during the Storm’s preliminary final victory over the Sharks on Friday night.

Slater was cited after he bundled Cronulla’s Sosaia Feki into touch with a hurtling bump in a last ditch-try saving effort.
