Raiders thumped as Eels spoil Aekins debut

It took just 28 minutes for Caleb Aekins to endear himself to the Raiders' faithful, doing the seemingly impossible and holding up a rampaging Maika Sivo. The Parramatta winger stepped inside Bailey Simonsson and looked set for a second try but Aekins refused to give up the goal line, despite giving up an almost 15kg weight discrepancy. Aekins won't remember his Raiders debut fondly though, after the Eels turned on the style in the second half to win 35-10. Sivo still finished with a try, and produced a key offload in the build up to Shaun Lane's spectacular second-half try. Winning in Canberra is a rare feeling for the Parramatta Eels, one they've not experienced since July 1, 2006.

The Canberra Raiders have some soul searching to do after they were completely outplayed by a slick Parramatta Eels at Canberra Stadium on Saturday night. Parramatta cruised to a 35-10 victory with an emphatic second half where they piled on four unanswered tries. The Green Machine picked their biggest crowd since 2019 (20,089) to put in their worst performance since then.  They were scrappy in the first half, with passes going to ground, trying to push offloads and generally poor ball retention. Things didn't start well for Raiders winger Jordan Rapana, dropping a Mitchell Moses bomb on the first set.

Both the Canberra Raiders and Parramatta Eels will be desperate to bounce back after disappointing losses when the two meet at GIO Stadium on Saturday night. The Raiders were outclassed 30-10 last week by the Panthers and lost fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad (neck) in the process.

It sees Caleb Aekins start in the fullback spot as he looks to press his claims for a full-time role after biding his time in reserve grade.
