Belconnen United Scholars (3) 36 defeated Goulburn Workers Bulldogs (5) 34 at Goulburn Workers Arena

Reigning premiers the Belconnen United Scholars have guaranteed themselves a home semi-final after defeating the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 36-34 in a tightly fought contest at Goulburn Workers Arena.

Experienced Scholars Coach John Hawke had said how influential a home semi-final would be to his side’s finals campaign and the 2012 premiership winning coach can now breathe a sigh of relief after the victory over the Bulldogs.

Despite knowing that this would be their last match of the season, Goulburn proved worthy adversaries against the Scholars as they attempted to deliver departing skipper Daniel York with a fitting farewell.

Doubles to Nathan Chappell, Chris Druett and Kurt Selmes nearly delivered York with a memorable good-bye gift however a dominant performance by the Scholars’ fearsome forward pack, led by Aidan Greenwood and Keremsoma Sione, secured victory for Belconnen United.

The Scholars showed plenty of spirit in the come-from-behind victory given that they had to play a man down after Raiders NYC player Aisea Taholo was sin-binned.

Belconnen United will look to sharpen up their defence this week at training or else the attacking talents of Tuggeranong’s Michael Brophy, Chris Faaee and Carl Johnson will wreak havoc in next week’s semi-final.
