The Canberra Raiders have slammed the NRL for issuing a tougher suspension and fine on Jack Wighton following his guilty plea on five counts of assault.
Wighton had already missed two weeks from a six-week suspension by the club due to his involvement in a pre-season incident of assault and public urination. But on Friday afternoon upon a further review with video footage also assessed by the NRL, the Raiders fullback was suspended for 10 weeks and imposed an additional fine of $30,000.
In an extraordinary press release sent moments after the NRL handed down the harsher punishment on Wighton, the Raiders criticised the league for their 'excessive' decision to rule the Raiders star ineligible to play until the end of round 25.
