Former NSW halfback Brett Kimmorley says Josh Dugan has learnt from the ''kick up the bum'' what was required to get his rugby league career back on track.

Dugan has rocketed into contention for a stunning State of Origin recall for NSW just three months after being sacked by the Canberra Raiders.

The 23-year-old's man of the match performance for the St George Illawarra Dragons in their 14-8 win against the Newcastle Knights has put him in the box seat to replace the injured Jarryd Hayne for game two at Suncorp Stadium on June 26.

Kimmorley, an assistant coach at the Raiders, stood by the club's decision to axe the talented fullback for his infamous rooftop drinking session and said it had acted as motivation for the one-time Blues representative to fulfil his immense potential.
